Introduction Rhythms Where would we be without rhythm? And what is rhythm exactly? It’s simply the timing of musical sounds and silences. Whereas pitch tells us the location of the sound we are after, rhythm tells us how long or short to play it for. In my my previous previ ous book on rhy r hyth thm m we looked l ooked at a t music music in i n standard 4 (fou ( fourr-fou four) r) time, time, but b ut if all 4 music were in this time signature, the world would be a pretty boring place! As you know, you divide by two each time to get the next note value.

These are the most common values you will see in modern music. Of course you can go further to thirty-second, sixty-fourth and one hundred and twenty-eighth notes. But you

Sometimes you might see a dot to the right of the note, adding half of the current value to the note. So if you have a quarter note and there is a dot, this means we have: a quarter + an eighth = 1/4 + 1/8 = 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 When you see this, you count the value of 3 eighth notes. There are also triplets which are 3 notes in the time of 2. The best way to count these is to count count 1- 2 - 3 or say s ay tri-pl-et (both ( both work as they they have have three syllables). syllables ). You can have a 1/2 note note triplet, tripl et, 1/4 note triplet, 1/8 note triple, and 1/16 note triplet. Counting The traditional Western way to count is detailed below for the four time signatures we ill cover. There are other systems from other cultures which you might help you if you ant to research them. I have laid out a simple reference for each time signature below up to 16th notes. Faster than that, you’re on your own to think of a way to count them, as they are really fast! One thing to note at this point is that as you count out ‘sev-en’ the word has two syllables so can be used to count two beats. (You could of course shorten ‘seven’ to ‘sev’, followed by eight, nine. On the next few pages we’ll study different rhythms, starting with one bar phrases in the first section and moving on to four bar patterns in the second section, so that you perfect the time signatures in your playing. Start with a metronome on 40 beats per minute and then choose a note or a chord. Pick something SIMPLE, as you are focusing on the rhythm and not the chord or note (although you should listen to this to check it sounds great). Work on your time and your sense of groove. [Groove being that quality that makes you want to replay a song you have just listened to again and again and again.] If you can play with great time and groove, you’ll likely to get more opportunities to play in public, as good musicians seek out other other good musi musicia cians. ns.
