Introduction Beep 4 Teacher’s Resource Book offers information and tips to help you get the most from all the teacher’s materials. It also contains additional photocopiable resources to help encourage and support the children’s learning. There are nine different sections, with graded sections to ensure that all levels of the class advance. Weaker students will gain from the extra material and stronger students will have further resources to stimulate their learning. Using the sections Beep optional worksheets can be photocopied according to the needs of individual children or the class as a whole. There are suggestions on when each activity should be done in the Teacher’s Book to assure that the content and vocabulary have been covered in the lesson. There are nine sections. • • • • • • • • •

Get enough photocopies of the worksheets in advance with a couple of spare copies just in case. Keep a copy for yourself to mark on any comments about how the children found the activity. Reinforcement worksheets are useful for children struggling with the level of the Student’s Book and who appreciate the chance to revise the grammar and vocabulary covered. They can be given as a homework activity. Extension worksheets can be used for fast finishers, for a more advanced study of the level, or given as a homework activity.
Sections Arts and Crafts The Arts and Crafts section of Beep 4 Teacher’s Resource Book includes one template per unit to photocopy and do as a full-class activity. The activities are easy to do, with step-by-step illustrations provided in Beep 4 Teacher’s Book. These activities are an ideal way for the children to practise what they have learnt in a more relaxed, creative atmosphere.
DVD Beep 4 DVD is an entertaining teaching resource divided into various sections for each unit. We recommend you take full advantage of this resource to liven up classes, bring the characters to life and create further interest in the Student’s Book. The Animated story for each unit allows you and the children to work with the story in an alternative and fun way. The Real Kids section contains short conversations featuring native British children in a natural setting using vocabulary and content from the unit. This is an excellent opportunity for the children to see native-speaking children talking in their own language. This type of communication, in which other cultural and social elements come into play, is probably the easiest way to create interest in learning English furthermore when, as in this case, they are listening to children their own age. There are two photocopiable worksheets for each unit: one for the animated story and one for the Real Kids. The full script, for Real Kids, and answer keys are provided at the end of the section.
Note: Both the Animated story and the Real Kids section can be played with subtitles for reading practice. Depending on the level and confidence of your class you may like to play short excerpts
3
from the DVDs, once without the subtitles (this is especially challenging for the stronger students), then with subtitles for better understanding and finally again without the subtitles. The last time can be particularly satisfying for children as they become familiar with the sounds of English, helped by the visual references of the DVD.

The Reader worksheets are designed to be used with Beep 4 Reader. The Reader worksheets fully exploit the section, making the most out of the children’s enjoyment of the story. Teaching tips and answers are provided at the end of the section.
The Language section includes three worksheets for each unit: Reinforcement, for children below the level of the class, Consolidation, for children at the level of the class, and Extension, for children above the level of the class. The worksheets are similar, but the level of difficulty varies. Answer keys for all the worksheets are provided at the end of the section.
Newcomers The Newcomers section provides topic based worksheets that are designed to be used by children joining the class at different times of the year. They provide basic vocabulary activities that will help the integration of children who are new to the class. Answer keys for all the worksheets are provided at the end of the section.
Phonics The Phonics section provides one worksheet per unit. These are designed to be used after lesson 7, alongside the Tongue Twister and Beep poster. Level 4 works on consonant and vowel sounds, which are sometimes difficult for children to pronounce. As they work through the Phonics worksheets, the phonemes and graphemes are repeated throughout, allowing the children to become familiar with them. Phonics is a very useful tool to focus on pronunciation and spelling difficulties. An early exposure to the sounds of English should prevent greater difficulties with understanding and pronunciation at a later stage. Answer keys for all the worksheets are provided at the end of the section.
4
The Cut-out section provides extra copies of the Student Cut-outs. These can be used for children who have lost, misplaced or damaged their Cut-outs, or simply as a sample for you.
Reader
Reading and Writing The Reading and Writing section consists of worksheets based on the activity types found in the Young Learner Exams, but using the vocabulary found in every unit of the Student’s Book. Answer keys for all the worksheets are provided at the end of the section.
Tests The Test section includes a Diagnostic test to be carried out at the beginning of the year, one two page Test per unit and a four page, End of year test. The tests include a variety of activities so that all children, whatever their particular strength or weakness, have an equal opportunity to do well in the tests. Lesson plans for testing are provided in the Evaluation lesson at the end of each unit in the Teacher’s Book. There is one listening activity included in each test, this is recorded on the Class audio and the script is provided in the Teacher’s Book. Answer keys for all the tests are provided at the end of the section.
i-solutions pack All the Beep digital components include a complete User’s guide, accessible from the main menu screen. They run on Windows, Linux and MAC operating systems and are compatible with all interactive whiteboard (IWB) software. Open the readme.txt file in each CD for minimum requirements and instructions.
The Beep i-solutions pack includes two CD-ROMs: • Beep i-book • Activity Generator Tips and more information on these solutions can be found on page 5.
The double-sided posters include the key vocabulary of each unit in large, colourful illustrations and a tongue twister which allows you and the children to focus on pronunciation and phonics. There are more general reviews and activities on six of the poster faces, which complete the set. The Teacher’s Book gives full instructions of when and how to use the posters.
Other resources Flashcards Flashcards are an excellent classroom tool to help introduce, reinforce and review vocabulary. Beep comes with a pack of 92 full colour flashcards illustrating key vocabulary. Instructions for using the flashcards are given in the teaching notes for each lesson. Each picture flashcard has a corresponding word card which can be used to help develop children’s reading skills, to assist in writing activities and to use in matching activities. The Beep flashcards can also be used in a variety of games which are explained in the Teacher’s Book. Children learn best when they enjoy what they are doing and games provide a way to engage children’s interest and enthusiasm. Games offer valuable opportunities to use the language for real purposes and provide enjoyable occasions for repeating and reinforcing the language, supporting retention and recall. Games which incorporate active methods using physical response are ideal for assimilating language. The children also have their own key vocabulary cut-outs which can be used in class or at home. There are games and activity ideas in the Teacher’s Book. The children can make envelopes or use food bags to store their cut-outs.
Posters There are a total of seven double-sided posters and one poster of practical expressions for permanent use in the classroom.
Tips •
•
Put two nails or drawing pins on the wall or in the wood of the blackboard and hang up the poster using two bulldog clips to avoid damage and the mess of Blu-Tack or adhesive tape. The poster is easily displayed and reversed. Hang the posters at the height of the children so that they can easily see them and participate with the activities.
Story cards Storytelling is very much part of the primary curriculum and Beep provides an entertaining story in each unit. Apart from a poster and cut-outs to aid with the storytelling, there is also a pack of 64 full colour story cards – 8 per story. On one side, the story cards have an enlarged version of the illustrations for each story in the Student’s Book and the text for that part of the story on the reverse.
Use the cards to: • Tell the story before, during or after listening. • Ask children to predict what might happen in the story. • Practise questions and answers. • Introduce and practise vocabulary. • Practise temporal sequencing of a story. • Describe a scene. • Develop reading and literacy skills. How to use the i-solutions pack 1) Beep i-book The Beep Teacher’s i-book is the digital version of the Beep course, which integrates all the teaching
5
materials into one single format. This fully interactive resource provides teachers with alternative and innovative ways to approach the Beep course contents. It can be used in two different ways: as an interactive guide to prepare lessons, and in class with an interactive whiteboard (IWB). The Beep Teacher’s i-book contains the Student’s Book, the Activity Book, the Teacher’s Book, the Teacher’s Resource Book, the Grammar Booklet and the Beep Reader as well as i-flashcards, i-posters, i-story cards plus extra interactive activities which provide thorough practice of the course contents. Audio material and teacher’s notes for all the teaching materials are also included.
How to use the Beep Teacher’s i-book on an interactive whiteboard (IWB) The Beep Teacher’s i-book is very user-friendly. Using the i-book in class is a wonderful way to focus the children’s attention on the specific content you wish to work with, since what they see on the IWB is also in their books. Follow these simple steps to work with the course materials in class: 1. Click on the book you want to use. 2. Click on the unit. 3. Click on the task to enlarge it in a new window. Access all the resources you may need to complete the task, such as answer keys, audio, audio transcripts, previous information from other tasks, etc., using the links at the top of the window. You can make these windows bigger or smaller by clicking on the bottom right-hand corner and dragging. 4. To close the window and return to a full-page view, click on CLOSE on the top right-hand corner. 5. Use the bottom menu to open other books. 6. You can minimize the i-book to work with other digital resources you may have in your computer. Direct links to other books, sections or pages Throughout the i-book there are various coloured links which lead to corresponding sections in other components of the course.

Pink: these links take you to the Student’s Book. Purple: these links take you to the Activity Book. Green: these links take you to the Teacher’s Book. Orange: these links take you to the Teacher’s Resource Book. Blue: these links take you to the Grammar Booklet. Red: these links take you to the i-posters, i-flashcards, i-story cards and i-activities for the unit. Listening activities in the i-book Not only can you hear the listening activities, you can also see them! • Tasks with a CD symbol are recorded. To listen to the audio, click on the task. A new window will open. • Use the buttons at the top of the window to play, stop, pause, rewind or fast forward the track. • The transcript button opens a new window containing the text version of the audio. • Children can listen and read at the same time using the controls in the transcript window. Images and pictures in the i-book All the images and pictures in the i-book can be enlarged. This is a fantastic feature of the Beep Teacher’s i-book and you can use it to maximize opportunities for developing children’s oral skills. i-flashcards, i-story cards and i-posters Use the i-flashcards, i-story cards and i-posters to present contents and revise key concepts throughout the unit. Alternate or combine the use of conventional flashcards, story cards and posters with the interactive ones to make your teaching more varied and to maintain the children’s attention. The interactive tools for the children are placed at a lower level on the screen to facilitate their participation with the IWB. The interactive tools for the teacher are located at the top of the screen to help you guide and control the children’s work. Encourage class interaction and develop children’s ICT skills by allowing them to use the interactive stylus to follow your instructions.
i-flashcards The access to the i-flashcards for the unit is located in the corresponding Student’s Book pages. The i-flashcards can be used to practise all four language skills in a very user-friendly way. You can decide which functions to use depending on your specific needs: • show a picture and ask the children to name it or ask them to use the interactive stylus to identify one of the pictures. All the pictures are placed at the bottom of the screen to make them easily accessible. • click on the text button to show the written form and promote reading skills. • click on the audio button to hear the word and practise the correct pronunciation. • give the children the interactive stylus and ask them to write or copy the word.
access to these activities is located on the Student’s pages, where they can be used to present, revise or reinforce key concepts from the unit. For more information about these interactive activities and the way to make the most of them using the IWB, please read the Beep CD-ROM section. The interactive board games in the review units can be used to revise the term core contents with the whole class. Roll the interactive dice and move the counter to the corresponding square. Ask the children to answer the question. Alternatively, you can form groups and ask each group to answer taking turns. The use of the clock tool from the IWB specific tools is also a good way to make the revision more challenging for the children and it also allows them to stop and think before they answer.
The i-posters offer two interactive activities to present and to reinforce the key vocabulary from the unit in a different way. This flexible resource also permits a wide range of extra interactive activities to evaluate or to expand the course contents using the IWB tools.
How to manage your teaching sessions The Richmond i-books now offer the possibility of saving all your teaching sessions. This allows you to customize your i-book for each of your classes, session by session if needed, in order to meet every class’ needs individually. You can create one or several sessions, as many as you need, export and import sessions in order to use them on different computers or edit sessions you have already created at any time! Once a session is created, you are ready to work with the i-book and customize it using the Richmond i-tools . You can insert notes, hyperlinks, or external files as well as add handwritten notes. All the information added to the i-book session will be automatically saved to your computer. You don’t need to quit the i-book to refer to different teaching sessions. Click on on the left hand side of the bottom menu to access the session registration window at any time. Access to the session registration window is only available from the main bottom menu. Once you are working with a book, this is the location to access the Richmond i-tools.

the i-book by inserting notes, hyperlinks and external files. It is also possible to write or paint on the i-book and in the zoom windows. By using the Richmond i-tools you can easily add your own material for the classroom, or stress the important points of a unit or activity. Drawing, colouring and matching activities can be made much more fun by using the write, colour and erase tools. The Richmond i-tools are located on the bottom lefthand corner and allow two levels of personalization: • On the main pages of the i-book by adding reminders, general points or materials for your class. • On the zoom pages by including materials or explanations to enrich a particular vocabulary, grammar or culture point. Click on to: 1. Insert notes. 2. Insert hyperlinks. 3. Insert files. 4. Use the cursor. 5. Write, colour and erase. 6. Hide or show part of the page content.
2) Activity Generator This innovative interactive tool for teachers allows the creation of personalized photocopiable worksheets using all the content from the Teacher’s Resource Book. The Activity Generator provides all the graphic resources, texts and illustrations from the Teacher’s Resource Book to be rearranged and edited by the teachers to generate their own materials based on the course contents. Beep CD-ROM The Beep CD-ROM is a fantastic interactive resource for both children and teachers which provides thorough practice of the Student’s Book contents. It contains eight units with interactive activities covering all the main language taught in the Student’s Book. The Beep CD-ROM can be used in class with an IWB to exploit the course contents while also helping children understand the concept of working together as a team to achieve a common
8
objective. Alternatively, it can be used on an individual level by children working alone either in the Multimedia Lab or at home, reinforcing their language learning outside the classroom.
How to use the Beep CD-ROM on an interactive whiteboard (IWB) Main menu: Access to units 1. Click on the unit. 2. Click on the relevant activity to open it. 3. Click on BACK to go back to the main menu. Each unit contains four activities which provide further practice of the Student’s Book contents. There are activities which include a timer to make them more challenging for the children. Some activities contain more than one screen. Click on the icon on the bottom menu to access the next screen. Most activities also include a final screen with animations to review the key concepts presented in each exercise. One of the activities in each unit is based on the CLIL section from the Student’s Book. The children expand their interdisciplinary knowledge through extra listening and reading comprehension activities. Each unit contains a digital version of the Beep story and a listening or reading comprehension activity. The digital story is an excellent tool to attract the children’s attention. The story runs automatically to facilitate its projection. Play and pause facilities are included. The possibility of moving to different vignettes is also available. Children can see the results for all the interactive activities they have worked with. The progress reports can also be printed and given to the teacher. The CD-ROM contains a screen to listen to all the songs of the course.
Beep Student’s CD Tip to use Student’s audio material in class The Student’s CD contains audio material for CD players. The songs from the Student’s Book are organized in a block so that they can be used as background music as the children work.
The YLE and Trinity test The Cambridge Young Learner Exams are designed for children aged from seven to twelve years old. Normally, they are tested in their own school environment or an exam centre, and the exams all follow the same format. There are three levels: Starters, Movers and Flyers. In terms of grammar and lexis, the Flyers level is on par with the KET exams. The difference is that, unlike the exams for older students, children cannot fail the YLE. Every participant is given a diploma with badges in Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. The badges are coloured in depending on the success of the candidate. Exams follow a very set format. The children never write on the exam papers, rather they answer on an answer sheet, usually with one word answers. They are tested in groups, except for the Speaking session, where the test is given individually. The YLE CD-ROM includes three complete tests. These can be printed out in colour and used for classroom practice; one set can be used many times. The children write their answers on a piece of paper except for the last page of the Listening exams, which is used for colouring and therefore can only be used once.
Trinity College London, Graded Examinations in Spoken English The Trinity Examinations in Spoken English are one-to-one oral examinations with a native English speaking Trinity examiner, which test a student’s speaking and listening skills. The exams provide an official recognition of a student’s level of spoken English and are accepted by universities and employers worldwide. Candidates must be aged seven or over. The examinations are divided into a series of 12 oral exams which test the student’s general conversation and ability to discuss prepared topics. The exam grades range from absolute beginner level to near native fluency. Apart from being a recognised metre of a student’s skills in English, the examination also works as a motivational tool encouraging children to practise and try to communicate in English.

When doing the practice exams it is best to recreate similar circumstances as when the children will do the exam themselves. Allow them the same amount of time and have them practise exam techniques. The ESOL web site has an abundance of exam tips as well as more practice activities and information about the exams. The interactive activities on the CD-ROM are divided into the different sections of the exams. This way you may choose to practise the same exam question in various exams, practise one complete exam, or pick and choose activities from different exams.

In each English lesson, ask general questions such as What day is it today? What’s the weather like today? Is it spring or summer? How old are you? Encourage full answers whenever asking questions. T: What day is it today? SS:Tuesday. T: It’s Tuesday. When asking questions, if a child does not know the answer, encourage them to say: I don’t know, I can’t remember or I’m sorry, I don’t know the word in English, rather than remaining silent or saying “err”. Make question practice fun. Do it in the form of a team quiz and award points. Practise for the exam in regular, short sessions so candidates become more confident with the style of question and can answer more rapidly and naturally. When choosing a grade for candidates, consider the child’s personality as well as their level of English. A shy child with a good level of English, may not do as well as a more outgoing child who speaks more spontaneously. Encourage the children to ask questions too. From Level 2 onwards they are expected to ask the examiner questions.

It’s the closest to the Sun and it’s the hottest planet. William: Sophie, come and see this. Look at his solar system. Sophie: Brilliant, Charlie! Where’s Earth? Charlie: Here. The third planet from the Sun. William: Where’s the moon? Charlie: The moon isn’t a planet, it’s a satellite. These are planets. They orbit the Sun. Hannah: Ladies and gentlemen, Charlie the Astronomer!

Sophie: Do you really like cooking and baking, George? George: Yes. Boys can bake too! Sophie: Ok. Ok. I’m sorry.
William: Hello, Hannah. Hi, Sophie. Whose is this? Hannah: That’s Sophie’s. William: Whose is that? Sophie: That’s my house and that’s Hannah’s flat. Hannah: They’re pictures for Tahmina. William: Hey! I can draw her a picture of our city. Sophie: Now, Tahmina can see where we live, too!

* Ask the children. It may be a surprise to the children, but Amy is wrong here. Sharks do in fact have scales and if you rubbed the skin from the tail to the head it would feel like sandpaper, not smooth. You might like to ask the children if they think Amy is right and if they can remember what a shark’s skin is like from the Student’s Book.
