Ancient Rome Assignment: Background: The Romans dominated Europe for almost a millennium. While they started as just another citystate within ancient Italy, they were able to eventually rise up, subjugate their neighbors, and expand into one of the largest empires in the history of the world. While Ancient Rome may have fallen, the Roman’s contribution to modern European society cannot be ignored. The “arch” in architecture comes from the Roman Empire. Latin, which forms the backbone to many modern languages comes from the Roman Empire. The republican governmental system (no, not the American political party) comes from the Roman Empire. These are just a few of the legacies of Ancient Rome. Your Assignment:
Law . Step 1: Read the 12 Tables of Roman Law. Do the Following: 1. Explain how the 12 Tables created a stable and repeatable system of justice for the people of Rome.
2. Explain which parts of the 12 Tables of Roman Law are still in existence today in America. Why do you think this is the case? 3. Which parts of the 12 Tables of Roman Law would not be considered acceptable in modern American society? Why? Step 2: Read this article about The Early Roman Republic and Early Roman Expansion Do the Following: 1. Explain the structure of the Roman republican republican government and explain how it is similar to and different from the modern American Federal government.
2. Explain how Rome was able to expand from a small, insignificant city state in 509 BC into a superpower by 281 BC. Step 3: Study this chart of the Roman Republic carefully. Do the Following: 1. Explain how having so many people involved in government can make it incredibly difficult to get a law passed.
2. Explain how this system of government can make it so one person cannot have supreme and sole power. Step 4: Read the tale of Spartacus of Spartacus Do the Following: 1. Explain the importance of slavery within the Roman economic system.
2. While Spartacus is generally a revered figure (and one of the first abolitionists within history), explain why he is so vilified by the Roman historians.
