ARTS: 2nd Quarter Grade 7 History of Philippine Printmaking Philippine printmaking became accepted as an art in the 1960s. This art form involves transferring images made by an artist onto paper. Many copies can be made of the image. Usually a limited number of copies is produced by the artist. Printmaking in the Philippines did not gain popularity as an art form until the early 1960s. Manuel Rodriguez Sr . and Rodolfo Paras-Perez were Paras-Perez were responsile for the de!elopment of interest in "ontemporary printmaking te"hni#ues. Rodriguez in parti"ular e"ame known as the $ather of Philippine Printmaking.
Printmaking was soon taught in se!eral s"hools. Rodriguez taught at the Philippine %omen&s 'ni!ersity(( making it the unoffi"ial "enter of printmaking in the "ountry. )e helped organize the 'ni!ersity Philippine *sso"iation of Printmakers. Some of the methods used in printmaking in the Philippines are the following •
Intaglio is a pro"ess in whi"h images are printed from a plate that holds ink in re"essed areas. Some intaglio methods are a#uatint( engra!ing( et"hing( mezzotint. o

Linoleum block or or Linocut is a method of printing in whi"h wh i"h the image to e printed is "ar!ed into a lo"k of linoleum.
•
Lithography is a method of printing in whi"h an image is drawn on a smooth plate that has een treated to a""ept a""ep t ink ut repel water. * greasy ink or spe"ial "rayons are used for drawing on this. * "oating of a"id and gum arai" is used to fi7 the drawing onto the surfa"e of the printing plate( to lightly et"h the plate( and to help the parts par ts of the plate that were not drawn on to hold water. 8il-ased ink is spread on the wet surfa"e and the wet areas repel the ink so it sti"ks only to the drawing. +he image is printed from this plate with the use of a press.
•
Serigraph or Silk Screen is a method of printing in whi"h a design is "reated on a stret"hed mesh fari" using a resist. 4nk is then pressed through the fari" to produ"e the print.
•
Woodblock or or Woodcut is a form of printing in whi"h a "ar!ed woodlo"k "o!ered with ink is used.
•
Drypoint is a method of printing in whi"h a sharp point is used to draw dire"tly on a "opper plate( "reating rough-ridged et"hed lines. +he ink "oats the raised areas( whi"h are printed.

Printmaking is the process of making artworks by printing normally on paper. !rintmaking normally covers only the process of creating prints that have an element of originality rather than "ust being a photographic reproduction of a painting. #$cept in the case of monotyping the process is capable of producing multiples of a same piece which is called a print. #ach print produced is not considered a %copy% but rather is considered an %original%. This is because typically each print varies to an e$tent due to variables intrinsic to the printmaking process and also because the imagery of a print is typically not simply a reproduction of another work but rather is often a uni&ue image designed from the start to be e$pressed in a particular printmaking techni&ue. ' print may be known as an impression . !rintmaking (other than monotyping) is not chosen only for its ability to produce multiple impressions but rather for the uni&ue &ualities that each of the printmaking processes lends itself to. !rints are created by transferring ink from a matri$ or through a prepared screen to a sheet of paper or other material. *ommon types of matrices include+ metal plates usually copper or ,inc or polymer plates for engraving or etching- stone aluminum or polymer for lithography- blocks of wood for woodcuts and wood engravings- and linoleum for linocuts. creens made of silk or synthetic fabrics are used for the screenprinting process. /ther types of matri$ substrates and related processes are discussed below. Multiple impressions printed from the same matri$ form an edition. ince the late 19th century artists have generally signed individual impressions from an edition and often number the impressions to form a limited edition- the matri$ is then destroyed so that no more prints can be produced. !rints may also be printed in book form such as illustrated books or artists books.
Relief printing is a printmaking process where protruding surface faces of the printing plate or block are inked- recessed areas are ink free. !rinting the image is therefore a relatively simple matter of inking the face of the matri$ and bringing it in rm contact with the paper. ' printing2press may not be needed as the back of the paper can be rubbed or pressed by hand with a simple tool such as a brayer or roller. Ething is the process of using strong acid or mordant to cut into the unprotected parts of a metal surface to create a design in intaglio in the metal (the original process3in modern manufacturing other chemicals may be used on other types of material). 's an intaglio method of printmaking it
is along with engraving the most important techni&ue for old master prints and remains in wide use today. * stencil is a thin sheet of material( su"h as paper( plasti"( wood or metal( with letters or a design "ut from it( used to produ"e the letters or design on an underlying surfa"e y applying pigment through the "ut-out holes in the material. +he k ey ad!antage of a sten"il is that it "an e reused to repeatedly and rapidly produ"e the same letters or design. +he design produ"ed with a sten"il is also "alled a sten"il. +he "onte7t in whi"h stencil is used makes "lear whi"h meaning is intended. *lthough aerosol or painting sten"ils "an e made for one-time use( typi"ally they are made with the intention of eing reused. +o e reusale( they must remain inta"t after a design is produ"ed and the sten"il is remo!ed from the work surfa"e. %ith some designs( this is done y "onne"ting sten"il islands uring s"reen printing and mimeography the images for sten"iling are roken down into "olor layers. Multiple layers of sten"ils are used on the same surfa"e to produ"e multi-"olored images.
