Capabilities Three main capability differentiators – Steady State vs. Dynamic modelling (SS / DYN) – Single line piping vs. Network modelling (SL or NET) – Single phase vs. multiphase modelling (SP or MP)
Assess your needs in terms of these capabilities – See table on next slide

HYSYS Pipe Segment
Part of standard HYSYS Steady State & Dynamics for modelling process piping and transport pipelines Needs feed and product streams, plus an Energy stream Represents “multi-segment” single line Segments can be pipes (different lengths, elevations, diameters), or fittings 7

HYSYS Pipe Segment
Limited network capabilities For a single pipe you can specify 2 out of Pin, Pout & Flow Alternatively, give all 3 (Pin, Pout & Flow) and it will calculate Length (for single segment only) For a single branched system of 3 pipes could specify, say, P1 & the 2 flows Calculates P2 Set mixer to equalize pressures, therefore P3 = P2 Calculates P4 and then P5 P1

HYSYS Pipe Segment
Limited network capabilities A typical gathering network will have well flows that depend on the back pressure of the network and a discharge pressure. Limited network models can be done with Adjust blocks to balance pressures (use Simultaneous Adjusts) A network that gathers more than five wells is usually slow to solve. Could do more wells with some flows fixed

HYSYS Pipe Segment Can model single phase and multiphase – Wide choice of multi phase correlations (see documentation for details)
Can model heat loss in detail – Can estimate heat transfer coefficient with Fluid + metal + 1 layer of insulation – Ambient medium can be Air, Ground or Water – Alternatively enter a coefficient for pipe, or for each segment – Or, specify heat loss

HYSYS Pipe Segment Runs in dynamics, but does not consider phase slip Option to use OLGA 2-phase or 3-phase correlations in PIPE The pipe model can predict typical slug length and frequency

Compressible Gas pipe Part of standard HYSYS Steady State & Dynamics Represents single line piping, no fittings Can only model single phase vapour
Can model the momentum balance – Suitable for pressure surge calculations
Simple heat loss model There is no reason to use this in Steady State – The pipe segment will do a better job – Only use in steady state as a start for dynamic model Only do this if in dynamics the momentum balance is required

Pipe included in valve Only works in dynamics Used to add piping pressure loss with minimal effort
No multiphase correlations No elevation profile possible

PIPESYS Third party product from Neotech (SPT Group) Represents single line piping and includes fittings – No advantage over pipe segment for in-plant piping (e.g. less fittings) – Alternative to PIPE for modelling transmission pipelines
Not in main unit operation palette Use Flowsheet > Add Operation… then select Extensions and PIPESYS © 2010 Aspen Technology, Inc. All rights reserved

12
PIPESYS More flexibility in the definition of the piping elevation profile compared to Pipe segment Can specify: – Horizontal distance along pipe from Origin – Run for each pipe – Length of each pipe
And – Rise (-ve = fall) – Elevation relative to Origin – Angle of pipe
In PIPESYS, compressors, pumps, heaters, coolers can also be included in the pipe run. © 2010 Aspen Technology, Inc. All rights reserved

13
PIPESYS Can model single phase and multiphase – Wide choice of multi phase correlations – Can specify different correlations for horizontal, vertical and inclined flow (currently not in Pipe Segment, will be in V7.3)
Can model heat loss in detail – Fluid + metal + multiple layers of insulation
Slug size estimation for pigging operations Pipeline cool down calculation for shut in pipe Can also use OLGAS correlations in PIPESYS Same network limitations as standard HYSYS PIPE unit

Aspen Hydraulics Requires an additional license – HYSYS Upstream in steady state – HYSYS Upstream Dynamics
Aimed at modelling pipelines and pipeline networks – Limited choice of fittings (valve, swage) – Full range of fittings available in V7.3
Can model heat loss in detail – Fluid + metal + multiple layers of insulation
2 and 3 phase transient analysis Pipeline cool down calculation for shut in pipe
