Extra Tips on Learning Hypnosis:
*In these books you will find techniques on how to hypnotize yourself and others... the most important aspect is figuring out for yourself the best methods that work for you. *Experience helps you most and it's fun to practice! Practicing proven methods like from the books above will enable you to get true hypnotic results from people you work with. *If you can guide yourself into hypnosis... you can show someone else the way. Just as if you would direct a person in a town they'd never been in, street by street, turn by turn is how the hypnotic process can be induced. This is why I find self-hypnosis to be such an important part to any hypnotist's experience and training.

Whats the best book on hypnosis?
i would really like to learn about hypnosis (mainly stage hypnosis) i dont meen just facts id like a book that actually trains you in it so i could learn to do the whole putting people in trances and what not:) is there one anyones read that they could recomend? Update: oh and i dont meen self hypnosis:)
Best Answer: Well mate, their are pretty much two schools of thought when it comes to stage hypnotism. Once you figure out which one you want to practice, picking a book is easy! The first school of thought is the New School, which about 90 percent of stage hypnotists practice these days. It is essentially a comedy show. You get some fun loving people up on stage, talk them into humping brooms, jumping out of their chairs, and otherwise deliver about 45 minutes of fun, lighthearted entertainment. This school is often criticized as being shallow or immature (which is true, in a sense, after you realize that no real hypnosis is necessary to make this a success). However it certainly has it's advantages. You will have no trouble whatsoever booking shows, and you will be able to perform many more comedy venues. The second school of thought is the Old School style. This style places more emphasis on 'quality enterainment' then the simple comedy that New Schoolers perform. Old School performers will cow a mysterious atmosphere (possibly drawing influence from the hidden parts of the Far East!), and perform mind blowing feats of mental control and prowess. These are the types of shows which are performed at theaters, which people will get dressed up to attend. These are the types of shows which, if done well, will get your name written up in the papers and have you perform before the Queen of England. You will have less shows if you choose to perform in this style, however each is better paying. Additionally, you will be in higher demand, since their are fewer hypnotists who still focus on this type of quality entertainment. To
further
clarify the
distinction between
these
schools,
consider
these
two
quotes.
"We are here to entertain, not hypnotize." -Geoff Ronning, one of the most famous New School comedy hypnotists of our time "The human mind is a storehouse of miracles. When you become a stage hypnotist, you become a practitioner of miracles." -Ormond McGill, a legendary stage hypnotist of the old school Which quote resonates with you more? Give this some thought, and then purchase one of the following two books: 1) The Ronning Guide to Modern Stage Hypnosis, by Geoff Ronning. An excelent book on starting your own comedy hypnosis buissiness. 18
2) The New Encyclopedia of Stage Hypnotism, by Ormond McGill. A veritable tome that not only will teach you everything you ever need to know about hypnosis, but also some stuff you may not :). A fabulous resource, although he does harbor some more experimental views on certain hypnotic phenomena (don't let this put you off though, just follow his instructions and it will work!) I own both books, and cannot recommend them enough. If you are still deciding which style to adopt, I'd recommend both. They compliment each other well. Roy Hunter's The Art of Hypnosis: Mastering Basic Techniques is required reading on some hypnosis courses and covers how to hypnotise, but is perhaps focused more towards therapists. Ormond McGill's The New Encyclopedia of Stage Hypnotism is very comprehensive on stage hypnosis. It gives many hypnosis techniques, but doesn't go into the basics quite as much as Roy's book. Source(s): http://www.royhunter.com/bookreco.htm Check out the Official Hypnosis FAQ as well while you are there - it has a stage hypnosis section. If you are looking for covert hypnosis, street hypnosis or stage hypnosis courses to study at home, Igor Ledochowski's training program in the best I know. Check the link below: Source(s): http://thepowerconversationalhypnosis.blogspot.pt/2014/01/The-Power-of-Conversational-HypnosisReview.html
You could check out this course about conversational hypnosis http://www.goobypls.com/r/rd.asp?gid=424... The best learning material I found on the net about the topic. http://www.quora.com/What-are-some-good-books-about-hypnosis
What are some good books about hypnosis? Best book - at least that I think - on hypnosis is "Trance-formations" by Richard Bandler and John Grinder, published in 1981. Other books are: Patterns of the hypnotic techniques of Milton H. Erickson, by Richard Bandler and John Grinder Guide to tranceformation, by Richard Bandler They are not "stage hypnosis" books, but they provide good reading material as a starting point for learning the skills. If you want stage hypnosis, I know a lot of stage hypnotists have read and watched at least some of the works of Ormond McGill. What hypnosis book is best to learn about it? What are some good self-hypnosis resources? What's the best book about covert hypnosis techniques? Hypnosis: Can I hypnotise myself out of depression? Books: Is there a good book/blog about the success of YouTube and YouTube stars? I agree with Marc Innegrave that "Trance-formations" is a good start. I generally won't recommend books for someone wanting to learn hypnosis, or if I do, I will advise against reading several different styles at once. I recommend picking one "guru" and sticking with their school of thought until you are fluent in that approach. Of course, my answer only applies if you are looking to BE a hypnotist. If you are just interested in the history of hypnosis, I'd say read all you can on it. 19
If you are looking to BE a hypnotist, I'd say skip years of reading and just start doing it. I'd recommend starting with Jeffrey Stephens' Weekend Hypnosis Workshop. His approach is the easiest I've come across to being able to "pick up" as rapidly as possible and get you to helping friends and family quit smoking and getting to their desired weight. I recommend Trancework by Michael Yapko. A Guide to Trance Land by Bill O'Hanlon. Hypnotic Realities by Erickson, Rossi, and Rossi. Training Trances by Overdurf & Silverthorn. A critical History of Hypnotism by Saul Rosenfeld. For serious training The Orca Institute, Hypnosis Practitioners Training Institute, and anything Richard Nongard produces. 10 Books Every Hypnotist Should Read April 5, 2010
The New Encyclopedia of Stage Hypnotism by Ormond McGill This book is truly an encyclopedia which includes not only a wealth of information about Stage Hypnosis but a whole variety of techniques and principles that are applicable to any hypnosis situation. This book includes information about how hypnosis works, hypnotic principles that apply to any situation, a whole chapter dedicated to 100 ways to getting someone into hypnosis, and it even shows you how to hypnotize a chicken. Note: Even those hypnotists who are not interested in doing any stage work should read this book! Take my word for it, it is one of the best out there.
Hypnotherapy by Dave Elman Elman was a pioneer in the art of medical hypnosis, and this historical classic explores not only the Dave Elman Induction, but shows a wealth of other hypnotic techniques like using hypnosis as an adjunct to chemical anesthesia, as a tool for impotence and frigidity, and using hypnosis to eliminate stuttering. It’s worth it to read this book just to get inside the mind of one of the legendary hypnotists of the past, as well as learn a lot of useful techniques.
20
Uncommon Therapy by Jay Haley This book quite simply blows my mind. Jay Haley provides a detailed account of Ericksonian hypnosis, and tells quite a few stories of how Milton Erickson performed his work. This is where you’ll find a lot of the examples of how to interact with a person, as well as information breaking down the structure of that communication and demystifying it so that you can use it. If you are a person who hopes to do any sort of therapy or coaching or to help people in their lives using hypnosis, this book is an absolute goldmine of information.
The Ronning Guide to Modern Stage Hypnosis by Geoff Ronning If you’re in for the par to learn stage hypnosis or want to be a professional stage hypnotist, I suggest checking out this book. Geoffrey Ronning has put together a very comprehensive guide on specifically how to perform a stage hypnosis show, how to get bookings, what happens if it all goes wrong, and tons of motivation. Although this book is mostly for stage hypnotists and it’s content is geared 90% towards that audience, if you do street hypnosis or even if you are just looking for a good suggestibility test to add onto your repetiore, this book will fulfill those needs.
Influence by Robert Cialdini I do believe I’ve quoted this book about a hundred times in instructing various events and seminars over the years. Cialdini was a guy who always fell for scams; if someone showed up and gave him a fancy sales pitch, he had to buy it. He got very curious as to why he always fell for these gambits, and began a length research procedure which now has been very well documented in his book. Most hypnotists have probably already read this book, but if you haven’t, order a copy. It’s very interesting reading.
21
Applied Hypnosis and Hyperempiria by Don Gibbons Probably my second most quoted book is this one, and usually I’ll just reference the book and tell people to go get it. This book by Don Gibbons is an accurate and realistic portrayal of what hypnosis is and what it isn’t. He talks about how hypnosis has been associated with sleep over the years, and how hyperempiria is actually the opposite of that, but that we use essentially the same process to get people into both states. As a bonus for this book, you learn how to take people into hyperempiric states of consciousness which can be very fun to play with. I’m always surprised at how many hypnotists haven’t even heard of hyperempiria or some of the other states that we have available to us. This is a mustread.
Reframing by Richard Bandler and John Grinder Reframing is a critical part of working with people and yet some of us know so little about it. A caller’s objections or a client’s misperceptions both have to be reframed and put into their proper light. People who are talented in the art of reframing are perceived as smarter, they make more money, and their clients have better results. This book shows you how to do it, along with giving you lots of techniques and understandings. It is a transcript of a live seminar that Bandler and Grinder did, but do not be fooled, this is one amazing book. I highly recommend picking up a copy.
Patterns of the Hypnotic Techniques of Milton H. Erickson, M.D., by John Grinder, Judith DeLozier, and Richard Bandler Another great book by Bandler and Grinder, this one also by Judith DeLozier, is the book that introduced the concept of the Milton Model in NLP. If you’re not familiar, Richard Bandler and John Grinder spent 9 months studying Milton Erickson and watching his videotapes. The very core essence of his patterns, called the Milton Model, is now taught in 1 day in NLP practitioner trainings. There’s two volumes to the series, and they are both great, although difficult to get through. It’s not light reading, but I think it’s time well spent. Great book.

My Voice Will Go With You by Sidney Rosen The subtitle of this book is “The Teaching Tales of Milton Erickson” and this one can be a lot of fun to read. These are some of the stories that Erickson used to tell people when hypnotizing them or before hypnotizing them. If you want to be fascinated with just how smart this guy was, read a couple of his stories and you might find yourself drifting off. Erickson was amazing at metaphor and relating concepts together, and Sidney Rosen does a fantastic job in this book cutting to the core of what we want to know. This should be in your library!
Trancework by Michael Yapko Trancework is a comprehensive guide to learning the fundamentals of clinical hypnosis. Although Yapko is mostly an Ericksonian-style hypnotist, he provides step-by-step instructions for getting things done in hypnosis. The book is also grounded firmly in research and pragmatism, and provides a great introduction to the art of hypnosis which you should re-read every couple of years to find out what you missed the first time. https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/hypnosis-the-power-trance/201201/study-hypnosis-the-bestprograms-books-and-ideas
Study Hypnosis: The Best Programs, Books, and Ideas Do you want to learn about Hypnosis?
Post published by John Ryder Ph.D. on Jan 05, 2012 in Hypnosis: The Power of Trance Hypnosis has been a subject of interest for well over a century and it has been used since the beginning of civilization. In the past it was just a trance or a dream state, a ritual dance or perhaps meditation. Anything you do that absorbs your attention and keeps distractions away puts you in that trance state. It is there to help us deal with the world we live in. It is a coping mechanism. Everyone relies on going into a trance some way almost every day. Hypnosis has also become a major tool in psychology and medicine, so if you are curious there is plenty to study. Doctor James Braid coined the term "hypnosis" from the Latin word for sleep back in 1841. Ever since then, hypnosis has been studied in every way and written about extensively. Because it was not regulated as a medical science in the early stages, many unscrupulous people made outrageous claims about it which created a bit of its mysterious reputation. Then Hollywood popularized its fantasized powers in many movies where people were put under a "spell" or made into a walking zombie under the control of the hypnotist. That is just pure fiction, that is not hypnosis. 23
The truth is that this is a powerful technique which can be used for tremendous good purposes in the right hands. The well trained hypnotherapist can help his subject experience amazingly effective trances that can resolve mental, emotional, or physical problems. The hypnotic tools that have been developed over the past century have been studied very carefully. Even the most well respected universities such as Stanford, Harvard, and many others have set up special programs dedicated to the study of hypnosis. This has resulted in a wealth of information about this subject. Hypnosis has many fascinating areas that are far from the conventional path of academics. Some of the research has been on gizmos, for instance, there are lots of spinning disks, pulsating lights, rhythmic sounds all supposedly designed to promote a trance state. Some of these things proved to be a powerful trance inducing mechanism, others were just a joke. Other research studies documented how trance can improve performance in a given task, or help people change a habit. The point here is that there is information about the science of how hypnosis works, what happens inside the brain, as well as how it can even help with serious medical problems. There is a great amount of research about hypnosis, the various techniques and all the different approaches to psychological problems that it can solve. If you are interested in psychology, you must study hypnosis. Although anyone can read about hypnosis and learn about how it works. There are many good books on hypnosis and you are advised to read many if you are truly interested in expanding your awareness about this subject. If you want to become an expert, you should get into a graduate school program in one of the health professions. At that point, I suggest you take practical workshops with qualified experts that teach the techniques to you in a supervised manner. A good student will study with many different experts in order to develop a broad perspective of how hypnosis works and it can be used. Caution! I do not recommend that you read a book or study with some unqualified hypnotist to start using hypnosis on others. However, it is easy learn about it and to use it on yourself, and it is safe to do so. Using this tool on others is unethical, irresponsible and may get you or the subject into trouble. So, don't try to hypnotize someone if you are not qualified to do it. It is just like going to a dentist, you want someone who is a licensed expert not some jerk who read a book about it and wants to experiment on you. The best professionals to go to are the highly trained and well experienced specialists. Although there are some very qualified lay hypnotists out there, it is generally recommended to go to a psychologist or other health professional that is certified by the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis (ASCH.net); you can locate many experts through them. For the aspiring professionals out there, you can find a schedule of workshops sponsored by ASCH on their website. There are also conventions and seminars about hypnosis by nationally recognized groups like the American Psychological Association (APA), International Society of Hypnosis (ISH), Society of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis, (SCEH), the Milton Erickson Foundation and the American Academy of Medical Hypnoanalysts (AAMH). There are many APA approved doctoral programs that teach about hypnosis from either or both the experimental and clinical perspective. If you are just curious and want to know more in general, the APA.org or ASCH.net websites contain a good amount of accurate information. There are plenty of websites about hypnosis but most of them are just trying to sell you worthless stuff that wont work as expected. Below is a list of books that are reliable sources of information. Also, you are welcome to drop by this blog and learn more as well. I am a certified by ASCH as a Consultant in Clinical Hypnosis which indicates that I have the knowledge and experience in clinical hypnosis and also, I can supervise others in studying these techniques: www.JohnRyderPhD.com (link is external) (for more info). There are two major academic journals about hypnosis that are published regularly: American Journal of Clinical Hypnosis International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis. There are many good books about this subject starting with classic texts and going to the more modern; here is a short list of my favorites: Hypnotherapy by Dave Elman Hypnosis and Suggestion in Psychotherapy by H.Bernhein Hypnotherapy - An Exploratory Casebook by Milton Erickson and Ernest Rossi Trance and Treatment: Clinical Uses of Hypnosis by Herbert Spiegel and David Spiegel. http://www.121hypnosis.com/about-me/rare-hypnosis-books/
My rare hypnosis books I enjoy collecting rare hypnosis books and oddities. Some of the older retro books are great fun for their sense of vintage atmosphere and enthusiasm. Its a shame that the best substantial books (like Milton Erickon’s Hypnotic Realities) are difficult to get hold of these days, whilst the introductory watered down books are everywhere. Some of my favourite hypnosis books: Transforming Therapy by Gil Boyne. I trained with Gil just before he died, and really like his style. He blends an excellent understanding of hypnosis (he loved his rapid inductions) with gestalt therapy and great emotional work. His case studies (some are in the book) are absolutely fascinating for their efficiency and results. Open to Suggestion, by Robert Temple. This was one of the first hypnosis books I got really stuck into. Temple is a layman, a hypnosis enthusiast, who basically researches and explores various areas and reports on them. His intrigue and enthusiasm are contagious, if you’re curious about hypnosis then he’s done all the work for you. It won’t teach you much about inductions but it gives a great overview of its uses and the nature of suggestibility. Hypnotic Realities, by Milton Erickson. Milton was studied intensely during the development of NLP – but I find his books are much richer than the “distilled” versions that Bandler and Grinder put out. I would rather learn from the transcripts, and the intents behind them, than the raw, clinical language patterns which can seem a bit pithy out of context. Erickson’s works are brilliant. Wake Up And Live, by Dorothea Brande. Not specifically about hypnosis, but a core feature of hypnosis
lies is at the apex of this book. Its an excellent and relevant wake up call to living without fear of failure, and the positive benefits of doing so.
Findings in Hypnosis, by Dave Elman. Dave Elman was a true master – he somehow had an innate awareness for how suggestion worked and was able to wield it in really interesting ways, whilst always being down to earth and humble about it. He covers waking suggestion, somnambulism, therapy with ease, and has a really infectious enthusiasm.

Below are some rare hypnosis books, various bits and bobs that people interested in hypnosis or NLP might find interesting (everyone else will probably just think its a bit geeky and odd). I have watermarked some images because cheeky hypnosis sorts were stealing them.
This retro-oddity isn’t a book, but a spinning hypnosis spiral. To see the blurb that was written to go along with it, see the hypnosis spirals page here.
This was from meeting Derren in Plymouth (I met him twice, he’s exceptionally polite. I’d say his early Derren Brown: Mind Control specials on TV were a big influence on me as well as many others, even if he was cheating most of the time).
Derren Brown’s Pure Effect is a rarity and a great book. The dedication reads “To my splendid friend Richard Pope, who understands what I mean about standards.” Derrens books, including Absolute 32
Magic and the more widely available ‘Tricks of the Mind’ are excellent reads and very witty. The subtle information about suggestion and forming in impression is just as relevant to a therapy professional as a magician – there are huge overlaps between the two in terms of suggestion and implying ideas.
An original Radiotimes from 1960 featuring Chan Canasta – this is the guy who inspired Derren Brown (interestingly, slightly similar pose to Mind Reader above). The card he thinks you’re thinking of here is 5 of Spades. I have a rare TV episode of his, and his blend of showmanship, trickery and charm is very Derren Brownish. Excellent stuff. Chan, like Derren, was also an accomplished painter. You can buy a great Chan Canasta image here.
Chan Canasta’s Book of Oopses – a collection of mind puzzles and visual tricks. Insanely rare, I once saw an unsigned tatty copy sell for over £300. Derren once said he’d buy the signed one from me.

Dave Elman was a great down-to-earth hypnotist and hero of mine, with a fascinating life story. He taught hypnosis to thousands of doctors. He got involved with the CIA after seeing a light flashing from a highrise office in a skyscraper opposite his radio building in Manhattan (where he hosted a show called ‘Hobby Lobby’). He was also raised in Fargo (same one as the Coen brothers movie). Gil Boyne was a keen follower of Elman, and later published his book and seminars. When Gil Boyne moved from California to London I sent him a rare framed print of Elman as a house warming gift, and Gil said on the phone “who was that fella in the photo?” I was amazed that despite having the rights to sell all his stuff, Gil never knew what Dave Elman actually looked like.
Virginia Satir – one of the three was who studied for the development of NLP (the others were Milton Erickson who I’m a keen fan of, and Fritz Perls, tbe daddy of Gestalt psychology).

I bought this Bandler (NLP) signed copy for 75p in a charity shop. It says “Time 4 knew thoughts”. More like time for a new book (I find most Bandler stuff is over-hyped bullshit, with the exception of Trance Formations).
I love this picture! This original news-sheet is full of great retro pics, and is framed on the wall. There’s even a section on animal hypnosis. I hypnotised a guinea-pig once, with a metronome. Little fella just sat there staring into space, and wouldn’t respond when you tickled his cheek (which he normally hated).

Some cool pics from one of many retro hypnosis books. Retro hypnosis books are great, and always seem to have delightful illustrations.
A 1900 edition of Trilby, with the original pictures drawn by the author, George Du Maurier.
A rare hardback edition of the rare classic book “Trance Formations”. NLPers get all wet about this book, although I must admit it is great.

William Kroger’s excellent book signed to someone called Mirella. Its a pretty hardcore book, covering many areas of hypnosis.
This book was the start of ideo-motor signalling being used as an indicator of subconscious processes.
Andrew Newton trained Paul McKenna, which means nothing really. Andrew is pretty scathing of Paul McKenna in this book, saying that he hates his audiences. An interesting book though, very down to earth.

Excellent book, and super-rare. I love that the author John “Jack” Watkins signed this to one of the people who worked at the hospital where the patients from the books case studies were. I really studied this book, analysing the case studies and drawing big charts of dynamic on A3 paper for each one.
Great hypnotic poster for a great film by Chris Nolan (The Dark Knight), this is framed in my living room. Modern movies are very hit-and-miss, but The Prestige is a terrifically directed film, very intricate, thematic and intelligent. It’s one of my all time favourites. I saw it for the first time at Okehamptons great little cinema. I loved that Thom Yorke’s ‘Analyse’ is used in the end credits. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0307718239/metafilter-20/ref=nosim/
