INTRODUCCIÓN Bien es sabido que el hábito de lectura no está muy extendido en nuestra sociedad. Prueba de ello es la falta de interés por parte de nuestros alumnos a la hora de elegir un texto y ponerse a leer. Además, este hecho se acentúa cuando la lectura es en lengua extranjera, y en nuestro caso el inglés. De este modo, hemos decidido colaborar para tratar de disipar la concepción tan negativa que nuestros alumnos tienen sobre la lectura, como algo trabajoso, muy difícil, aburrido, y que siempre requiere la continua consulta del diccionario. Así pues, elegimos los grupos de 3º de E.S.O, por tener una mayor fluidez que en el ciclo anterior, y porque los hábitos y estrategias de aprendizaje que queremos comunicar tienen suficiente tiempo de ser empleadas a lo largo del ciclo y en la etapa de Bachillerato. Además, pueden ser monitorizadas por parte de los profesores de forma consensuada, para darle más solidez al aprendizaje. El texto que hemos elegido para trabajar es “A Sherlock Holmes Collection”, una versión adaptada para alumnos de 3º de E.S.O, de la editorial Burlington, sobre las obras escritas por Sir Arthur Conar Doyle a finales del siglo XIX. Hemos escogido esta obra porque a la vez que tratamos una obra clásica, también es un género literario que suele gustar mucho a los alumnos, y del que conocen bastante, sobre todo de Sherlock Holmes, a través de películas, cómics, ... Finalmente, las actividades que proponemos tienen como fin motivar a alumno y proporcionarle estrategias de aprendizaje que puedan ser aplicables a cualquier tipo de lectura. Así pues, sugerimos actividades para clarificar el contexto socio-cultural mediante una proyección de audiovisuales, pequeñas lecturas, y comentarios al respecto ; así como, actividades sobre estrategias para distinguir entre diferente tipo de información en una lectura comprensiva, junto a otras sobre inferencia del significado de vocabulario a través del contexto lingüístico. Todas estas actividades se verán ilustradas con una serie de apéndices que aparecerán al final del trabajo.

ACTIVIDAD 1 TIPO DE ACTIVIDAD : Motivación y contextualización. OBJETIVO: Comprobar y ampliar conocimientos sobre el personaje de Sherlock Holmes, la biografía del escritor que lo creó, Sir Conan Doyle; la época victoriana, así como otros elementos socioculturales actuales sobre el mundo de este detective.
JUSTIFICACIÓN: Motivar al alumno sobre la posterior lectura del libro “A Sherlock Holmes Collection”, ayudándoles a situarlos en el contexto apropiado, para así acercarse con más ánimo y mejor a este libro.
TIEMPO: 20 minutos. PASOS:
1.
Comprobar el conocimiento previo del alumno sobre Sherlock Holmes y su mundo, mediante lluvia de ideas de los alumnos sobre el tema, que se van apuntado en la pizarra (ver apéndice 1a).
2. En grupos de 3 ó 4 los alumnos leen los artículos y ven las fotos que el profesor les entrega, que son diferentes de un grupo a otro (ver apéndices 1b, 1c, 1d, 1e, 1f, 1g). Entre ellos van seleccionando la información que desconocían y nombran a un portavoz del grupo quien será el que facilite los nuevos datos al resto de la clase. El profesor va traduciendo y escribiendo en la pizarra lo que los alumnos le van diciendo (ver apéndice 1a). 3. Entre toda la clase hablan sobre lo que han aprendido, así van creando expectativas sobre la siguiente actividad (película “La Vida Privada De Sherlock Holmes), aportan su opinión sobre cómo han trabajado.

ACTIVIDAD 2 TIPO DE ACTIVIDAD : Proyección de la película “La Vida Privada de Sherlock Holmes” con un cuestionario sobre información global referida a Sherlock Holmes y su entorno.
OBJETIVO: Consolidar las ideas que los alumnos han adquirido en la actividad 1, así como adquirir información nueva sobre el mundo de Sherlock Holmes, mediante la aplicación de estrategias de aprendizaje como la comparación, inferencia, deducción, contraste, ...
JUSTIFICACIÓN : Motivar al alumno a conocer y consolidar ideas a través de los medios audio-visuales, ya que al intervenir más sentidos en el proceso, el aprendizaje adquiere mayor consolidación.
TIEMPO:
2 Horas ( 10 minutos de presentación de la actividad y lectura del cuestionario, 1 hora y media de proyección y 20 minutos para rellenar el cuest ionario).
PASOS:
1. El profesor informa de la actividad que van a realizar, indicando que va a ser una película (“La Vida Privada de Sherlock Holmes”, dirigida por Billy Wilder en 1970) y reparte a cada alumno un cuestionario con las preguntas sobre cuestiones generales presentes en la película (ver apéndice 2a). 2. Cada alumno lee el cuestionario y pregunta al profesor las dudas que tenga sobre el mismo. 4. El profesor señala las cuestiones socio-culturales que los alumnos desconocen y que aparecen en la película, como pueda ser la leyenda del monstruo del Lago Ness. 5. Proyección de la película y toma de notas por parte de los a lumnos. 6. Una vez vista la película los alumnos se reúnen en pequeños grupos de 4 personas para completar y comprobar sus respuestas. 7. Puesta en común de toda la clase sobre la información que se requería y comentarios sobre las dificultades que han encontrado en la actividad.

ACTIVIDAD 3 TIPO DE ACTIVIDAD : Estrategias de comunicaciòn. OBJETIVO : hacer que los alumnos pongan en práctica estrategias de comunicación tale s como la "deducción" ( ya sea del contexto o transferencia lingüística con el español ). JUSTIFICACION : necesidad de que los alumnos practiquen estrategias de comunicación para resolver problemas de vocabulario desconocido en un texto inglés.
TIEMPO: 50' PASOS: 1.Mediante una serie de preguntas el profesor introduce sutilmente el tema de la lectura a sus alumnos. Este primer paso les será de gran utilidad a la hora de determinar cual es ó cuales son las actitudes generales en torno a la lectura. En caso de que se detecte una actitud negativa, el profesor tratará de identificar las principales dificultades con las que se enfrenta el alumno y que hacen de la lectura una actividad frustr ante y aburrida en muchos casos. Posibles preguntas : ¿ Cuál es el último libro que leísteis?, ¿ os gustó?, ¿ leéis a menudo?, ¿por qué no?. ¿ buscais todas las palabras que no entendeis en el diccionario?… Posibles respuestas : " No me gusta leer porque hay vocabulario que no entiendo"… " no busco todas las palabras"… El profesor dirigirá las respuestas de los alumnos tratando de llevarlas a su terreno para así introducir el concepto de "deducción". 2. A continuación el profesor les dará a los alumnos un texto en español con determinadas palabras subrayadas cuyo significado es probable que desconozcan. Se les pide que den una definición para cada una de ellas. Indirectamente los alumnos estarán haciendo uso de la estrategia de deducción. ( Appendix 3A). 3. Una vez que el profesor les hace ver que son capaces de enfrentarse con éxito a un texto con vocabulario desconocido, les propone un nuevo reto. Practicar la estrategia en un texto inglés extraido de la obra “A Sherlock Holmes Collection” by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. 4. De modo similar al anterior se les pedirá que deduzcan el significado de determinadas palabras y que expliquen qué elementos del texto les ayudaron a llegar a esa conclusión. Ex para deducir el significado de la palabra ‘stormy’ los alumnos harán referencia a los términos "umbrella", "wet" o a frases como "the weather is terrible" … 5. De modo similar al anterior los alumnos trabajarán sobre vocabulario desconocido, pero esta vez harán uso inconscientemente de la transferencia lingüística con el español. Ex. serán capaces de deducir el significado de palabras como "trembling", "ventilator", "terrified"… por su parecido los vocablos españoles "temblando", "ventilador", "aterrado"… (Apéndice 3B). 6. ACTIVIDAD 4 TIPO DE ACTIVIDAD : Lectura comprensiva. OBJETIVO : conseguir que los alumnos sean capaces de extraer informaci ón global de un extracto literario de la obra "A Sherlock Holmes Collection" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle distinguiendo entre información básica e información secundaria.
JUSTIFICACION : hacer que los alumnos vean el proceso de lectura en lengua inglesa como una actividad posible y accesible a sus capacidades.
TIEMPO : 1 hora y media. PASOS : 1. El profesor introduce el concepto de información principal y secundaria del siguiente modo. Pide a los alumnos que resuman el contenido del último libro que han leido. Inconscientemente los alumnos estarán haciendo una selección de elementos principales o básicos y elementos secundarios o menos relevantes. 2. A continuación y de modo más abierto se les invita a que reflexionen sobre los elementos que han incluido en sus narraciones. Llegaremos así a la conclusión de que en cualquier narración distinguimos elementos básicos para el desarrollo de la acción y elementos que no lo son tanto. Dentro de los primeros destacamos: la introducción, el desarrollo de la acción y el desenlace de ésta. Se concluye afirmando que para llegar a la comprensión de una historia no es imprescindible llegar a un entendimiento de todos y cada uno de los el ementos que aparecen en ella. 3. La clase es dividida en varios grupos. A cada uno de ell os se le asigna un fragmento perteneciente al primer capítulo de la obra que nos ocupa. Con la ayuda de sus compañeros deberán leerla. 4. El profesor centra la atención de los alumnos en determinadas frases extraidas del texto que previamente han leido. Se les pide que reflexionen sobre su relevancia dentro de la historia estableciendo una división entre información principal y secundaria .(Apéndice 4A). 5. Los alumnos emplearán la información básica seleccionada previamente para elaborar un pequeño resumen. 6. Cada uno de los grupos lee su resumen en voz alta ll egándose así a una com prensión global del primer capítulo. 7. Debate sobre la actividad realizada y su utilidad.

ACTIVIDAD 5 TIPO DE ACTIVIDAD : Lectura comprensiva y escritura. OBJETIVO : comprobar hasta que punto les han sido de utilidad las actividades de aprendizaje planteadas en la unidad.
JUSTIFICACION: poner en práctica y hacer uso de todas las estrategias y medios hasta ahora desarrollados para hacer frente a un cuestionario sobre la obra “A Sherlock Holmes Collection”.
TIEMPO : 1 horas. PASOS : 1.El profesor les pregunta a sus alumnos como les ha resultado la lectura de la obra después de realizar las actividades previas y abre un pequeño debate a fin de de terminar cuál es la historia que les ha divertido más y que les ha sido más facil de comprender. 2. Basándose en las respuestas de cada uno de los alumnos, el profesor establecerá distintos grupos a fin de que profundizen un poco más en el capítulo por el que han mostrado especial interés. A cada uno de estos grupos se les hará entrega de un cuestionario que deberán realizar. (Apéndice 5a). 3. Una vez realizado el cuestionario, los alumnos leerán las respuestas en voz alta a sus compañeros. En las producciones orales de los alumnos se tendrá en cuenta no tanto la forma como el contenido de sus exposiciones, intentando así deter minar el grado de comprensión que han alcanzado. 4. A continuación el profesor abrirá un debate con sus alumnos acerca del desarrollo de la actividad : ¿ ha cambiado algo su actitud hacia la lectura?, ¿se ven capaces de emprender solos la lectura de otra obra en inglés?, ¿qué apoyos les han sido más útiles ?, ¿ a qué conclusiones han llegado?...
