THE AWARENESS OF ENERGY EFFICIENCY AMONG STUDENTS IN KOLEJ KEDIAMAN MELEWAR, UTHM

ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study is to explore the level of awareness about the energy efficiency among the UTHM student. The level of student's awareness is valued based on their knowledge, perceptions, and practice. There are 9 students that are staying in Kolej Kediaman Melewar has been purposely picked as the respondents in this research. The instrument of this research is the researcher itself . The data were collected through the structured interview and then transcribed using the word process. The transcribed data were analyzed using the NVivo software. This study shows that the level of awareness about energy efficiency among the student is even. Most of the college occupants do understand about how they really need to save energy but there are no motivation to do that.

INTRODUCTION
Nowadays, the effect of the development and progression of Malaysia are present in many area such as in generating electricity. The massive use of material or high-tech products without considering the risk management of energy which comes from natural sources that are nonrenewable such as oil and coal led to excess uses of energy. According to Syed Hussain (2013), the excess uses of electricity prompted the government to increase the amount of energy generated in order to meet the user requirements. Thus, this condition cause to the increased of electricity bill when the government had to raise the electricity tariff. Power supply is insufficient and uncertain market prices will have an impact on the destruction of the environment such as climate change in the developing countries especially in Southeast Asia, including Malaysia (Syed Hussain, 2013). The potential of the energy saving is very large, if it is implemented in a strategic.

the amount of electricity generating capacity that will be require by 2030 was about 3.7 gigawatts (GW). Various measures and strategies related to energy savings through efficient and optimum uses should be emphasized. Energy efficiency is the use of technology that requires less of energy to perform the same function. Using the energy wisely means using energy efficiently. Using the energy efficiently is the best way to reduce the production of Carbon
Dioxide by each individual bec ause for every 1kWh of electricity consumed is equivalent to approximately 0.69 kg of Carb n Dioxide emission to the environment (Zai i Abdul Wahab, 2013). Various programs have been organized to implement the lifestyle w ith more energy efficient. However, the question arises to what extent the community can achie e what has been planned by the government to s ave the energy? The waste of energy consum ption still occurs despite the fact that the consum rs know that the energy efficiency provides m ny benefits such as cost savings on electricity
ills. According to Hori (2013), the energy
onservation and
efficiency are very important i n achieving the sustainable and stable growt . Therefore, the government should encourage th e community especially among the younger ge eration to have a high level of awareness so that t e energy waste can be avoided and embrace th energy efficient practices.

Theoretical Framewor
Awareness is an important aspe t in man because it can determine the human b ehavior and their gestures on something. Awareness encompasses three main area, knowledge, perceptions and practices (Ma'arof Redzuan, 200 1). According to Giller (2000), level of conscio usness is divided into four sections as shown in fi ure below.

Consequently, the knowledge c an be obtained through observation, listening and media taht available around the individual. Therefore, the knowledge among the individua l makes it easier for them to learn in depth ab ut the information around them. Thus, with this knowledge, individuals will implement th
energy efficiency activities base on their knowledge. The
perception explaining somethi g about ourselves and the community. Th e perception of individuals will come up with something like a method or suggestions to
elp. In terms of
practice, the act is committed by an individual or community to address and red ce the impact of malpractice. Thus, the combin tion between the components of knowledge, perceptions and practices will motivate and train the individuals to respond positively to a certai thing especially on the energy efficiency activiti s. Therefore, this combination is very importa nt to the success of energy efficiency efforts.

LITERATURE REVIEW
2.1
Energy Efficiency
According to World Energy Council, energy efficiency means use energy wisely to save cost. Energy efficiency can reduce the environmental pollution and ensure continuous supply of energy without affect the cooperative productivity and environmental quality (Chin Siong, 2008). The energy efficiency also can increase the economic development while conserving the environment by reducing the amount of gases from the green house about 13%. According to Chin Siong (2008), the importance of energy efficiency is as follows: i.
Obtaining a financial advantage
ii.
Save the fossil fuel
iii.
Conserving the environment
iv.
Improve the foreign currency reserves of the country

Energy
According to Ab Rahman (2009), energy is defined as the ability and capacity of the system to move. He continued, in Malaysia, the electricity supplied by Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) powered by hydro or thermal such as coal, oil or natural gas. According to the Electric Act 1990, electric means electrical energy or electricity when generated, manufactures, delivered, distributed, supplied or used for any purpose except for the transmission of any communication or signal. The production of electrical energy generated by the movement of water, gas, steam and so on (Mohd Salleh, 2008).

Energy Sources
The resource of energy is the basic material needed to produce energy. The source of energy is supplied through four basic sources; solar, geothermal, wave and nuclear energy. The sources of energy can be converted into electrical energy and from the electrical energy, it can be converted
to other energy form (Mohd Salleh, 2008). However, based on information from SWITCH (2011), the energy source can generally be divided into four categories: i. ii.
Renewable energy resource; solar, wind, wave, biomass, geothermal Non-renewable energy resource; fossil fuel, petroleum, coal, natural gas and mineral fuels

Primary energy resource
iv.
Secondary energy resource
According to Thanesh Kumar (2011), the secondary energy resources is an energy source that has changed from a major energy source through the energy conversion process . Secondary energy sources also refer to as the energy carrier of energy is in a form that can be moved from one place to another. Conversion of energy from renewable sources of energy to secondary energy sources is essential to use a more convenient and beneficial to the activities of the user. Examples of secondary energy is electric and hydrogen fuel . The use of hydrogen as a secondary energy source is still limited and its use is expected to increase in the future.

Energy Efficiency and Energy Conservation
Energy conservation refers to efforts made to reduce energy consumption. Energy conservation can be achieved through increased efficient energy use, in conjunction with decreased energy consumption and/or reduced consumption from conventional energy sources (Mageswaran Senderal, 2011). Energy conservation does not necessarily means efficient energy usage. However, both the energy efficiency and energy conservation save the energy and reduce the operating costs. Energy efficiency can be achieved by the application of efficient technologies such as high energy-efficient motors, bulb, and etc. The energy efficiency mostly used for industry while the energy conservation mostly used in all sector. Energy conservation can be achieve through the efficient energy use such as turning off lights and electrical appliances when not needed, using sunlight for energy and others. Energy conservation costs nothing and only requires a change in consumer behaviour. According to Mageswaran Senderal (2011), energy conservation facilitates the replacement of non-renewable resources with renewable energy. Energy
conservation is often the most economical solution to energy shortages, and is a more environmentally benign alternative to increased energy production. According to Thanesh Kumar (2011), there are 23 ways on how the consumers can practice energy efficiency and energy saving in their daily life as follows: 1) Temperature of the air-conditioner set to be 24ºC or more
If you are used to being at lower temperatures, then try to get used to being in at least 24°C because it will help your home air-conditioner last longer. 2) Keep the windows and doors closed when using the air-conditioner
This practice is to avoid wasting energy when using the air conditioner. 3) Turn-off room lights when not in use.
Many consumers ignore the habit to switch OFF the lights when leaving the room. Habit of not switching OFF lights when necessary is one source of energy wastage. 4) Switch OFF the electrical appliances
Electrical appliances, equipment and devices at home such as computer, iron, television, etc need to be switched OFF when not in use for efficient management of electricity and to ensure that these equipment serves a long life expectancy. A step further to disconnect the power cable of equipment from the wall socket is the best practice. 5) Electrical Iron
The electrical heater inside the iron uses a lot of electricity. To minimize the usage of electricity, iron as much as possible the clothes at a single instance instead of few times in a day.
6) Refrigerator –Size factor
Get a fridge according to necessity and not because of interest of having huge ones at home because larger fridges uses more electricity. Always go for the energy efficient fridges having the 5 Star rating. 7) Refrigerator - Frost collection
There are some refrigerators that do not come with the ‘defrost’ system. If you have a refrigerator of this type, then contact a refrigerator technician for help to remove the frost. 8) Refrigerator – Arrangement of food items
Ensure the food layout allows free air movement between food items. 9) Refrigerator – Location
The efficiency of a refrigerator also depends on the location where the refrigerator is stored. Ensure that there is adequate space on the side and the back of the refrigerator for unobstructed movement of air. 10) Refrigerator – Condenser coil
The efficiency of a refrigerator also depends on the condenser coils and care should be given to the cleanliness of the condenser coils. The cleaning activity should be planned as a part of its preventive maintenance. 11) Electric oven / Microwave
Microwave door gaskets should always be in closed position to prevent loss of energy.
12) Electric Kettle
Using the electric kettle to boil the water is very much energy conserving because the heating element inside the electric kettle is in direct contact with water for boiling, thus reducing excessive loss of heat. Heating element should also be cleaned to reduce energy consumption. 13) Water Heater for shower
Instant water heaters can save more energy than stagnant water heater. If you have been using stagnant water heater in your house, the consider changing to instant water heater. 14) Computer operation
A computer that operates in standby mode or sleep mode wastes energy. It is best practice to shut down the computer when not needed to reduce energy waste. 15) Change to LCD Monitor
Conversion in using the to energy-efficient LCD monitors instead of the CRT monitor is a good move for energy conservation. 16) Replace old fans
If you have fans at your home that has been in operation for decades, then consider changing them to a new one which is more energy efficient. It uses lesser electricity. 17) Use fluorescent lights instead of round lights
Fluorescent lamps are several times brighter than a round incandescent bulb for the same wattage of electricity. Use energy efficient fluorescent lights where possible. 18) Change Incandescent lamps to CFL lamps
Incandescent lamps are not energy efficient and this means there is wastage in electrical energy. Change to Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) for energy efficiency.
19) Preventive Maintenance on air-filter inside the air-conditioner
Dirty air filters can cause excessive energy consumption in the cooling process. Get the air filter cleaned once in 3 months as part of the preventive maintenance for the air-conditioner. 20) Plant Trees
Planting trees around the home to some extent will help in the process of cooling our homes because the trees absorb Carbon dioxide gas (CO2) in the air. Excessive CO2 in the air is one of the biggest contributors to global warming. 21) Air-Conditioners should not be placed in places where there is obstruction
Ensure that there is no furniture that blocks the sensor of the air-conditioner and the air from the front panel is not obstructed. 22) Air-Conditioner that suits the consumer need
If an air-conditioner is needed for cooling in a small room, then a 1.5hp or 2hp air-conditioner is sufficient. There is no need to use high horsepower (HP) for small areas because it wills consumer more energy. 23) Roof and ceiling insulation
There is a connection between the roof & ceiling insulation and energy consumption in the home. There is a range of insulation material that caters for houses in cold and hot location.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
This research focuses on the evaluation of the awareness on energy efficiency activities among the UTHM's student who live in Kolej Kediaman Melewar. Consequently, the researcher present three research question that will occupy them as below: i.
How is the level of knowledge among the student about energy efficiency activities in Kolej Kediaman Melewar?

How is student's perception about energy efficiency activities
in Kolej Kediaman
Melewar? iii.
How students practice the energy efficiency in Kolej Kediaman Melewar?
iv.
How the awareness among the student influence the energy efficiency activities in Kolej Kediaman Melewar?
3.1
The Design of Study
The design of this study was in form of field research that aims to find out the level of awareness among the UTHM student which live in Kolej Kediaman Melewar regarding the energy efficiency activities. The data for this study were collected through the structured interview with the respondents.
3.2
Location of Study
This study was conducted at the Kolej Kediaman Melewar, UTHM. The selection of this hostel is to meet the criteria of the assignment that requires students to conduct a mini qualitative reseacrh around the UTHM.
3.3
Population and Sample of Study
Purposive sample were used among the UTHM's student because the study only focus on those who live in Kolej Kediaman Melewar. Nine of the students were interviewed to get the data.
3.4
Instrument
The researcher is the main instrument in this study and during the process of collecting data, the researcher used the structured interview method. To get the validity of the instrument and the interview protocol, researchers have conducted a review session with the tutor, Puan Norhayati Ngadiman. Through a structured interview, the interviewer uses an interview schedule that will contain a list of fixed question (Sabitha,2005). According to Colby and Kohnberg (1987), there
are three ways to conduct an interview to determine the moral reasoning of the participants in the study. First, oral interviews ( taped and transcribed), second, oral interview but at the same time, the researcher write the interview and the third, an interview in which the participants were asked to write their action and their reason on the given dilemma of moral. In this study, the researcher have used the first method to get the feedback from the participants of study. The interviews are recorded and then transcribed. The choice of this method is that it is the best among the other interview (Colby and Kohnberg, 1987).

Analysis of Data
In the pre-analysis phase, the researcher has read and reviewed all the field's note. Besides, the researcher also labeled the data according to its type. The audio data from the interviews were transcribed in work processing and then analyzed by the researcher themselves with the help of NVivo software.

Validity and Reliability
To determine the validity and reliability, a 'member check' method has been used. Member check refers to the opportunity given to the same group of friends to recheck the reason for the action that have been given after the interviews transcribed by the researchers.

RESULTS
4.1
Level of knowledge among the student about the energy efficiency activities in Kolej Kediaman Melewar
The researcher asked the following questions to determine the level of student's knowledge of energy efficiency activities:

From the interview that hat have been held, researcher found that student's knowledge about energy efficiency activities are high because the average sample agreed with the question asked. This statement is supported by the participants responded as follows:

Student's perception about energy efficiency activities in Kolej Kediaman Melewar
Most of the participant agree if the energy savings needs to be done across the board especially in the residential college. The respondent gave some reason why they agree as follows:

: sebab kalau.... macammm..kat sini kalau kita tak jimat elektrik confirm confirm la dia punya bil elektrik akan naik.mungkin dia akan beri kesan kepada pelajar jugak.

:Ermm pada saya ya...dengan penjimatan tenaga elektrik kita dapat mengurangkan kos elektrik di mana yang kita tahu sekarang ni untuk perbelanjaan pembayaran untuk utilities U ni dalam 2 juta tak silap saya..so kita perlulah adakan pendedahan kepada pelajar mengenai penjimatan elektrik ini..
To implement the mandatory, only three respondent agreed and six of them against the suggestion. The reason why they agreed is because it this method is good to control the student.

From the responds of participant, researcher conclude that the mandatory method is not suitable to be executed in college. However, most of the participant agreed to the enforcement to educate them to become prudent. The participant believe that the enforcement could help students more aware about the energy efficiency and energy savings.

From the data collected, most of the participant agreed that by controlling the use of electrical appliances can reduce the electricity consumption.

Most of the participant agreed to the use of light or electrical appliances at night for the decorative purpose at residential college is a waste. For them, lighting at night is unnecessary unless those who act as safety like the lamp-post so on. This can be support by the following responds from participant.

For the next question, all the participant agreed that reading at foyer, lobby, or cafeteria at night is not an efficient energy use because of the small number of student compared to area that will need light.

All participant agreed that we should make sure that only a certain light can be on until the morning to reduce the energy consumption. They also agreed that energy savings can reduce the expenses by the university and also can help to save the environment. This can be support with the following statement:

The energy efficiency practice among the student
Most of the college occupants do understand about how they really need to save energy but there are no motivation to do that. Some of them said that the reason why they do not switch off the light at night because they afraid of darkness. There is a respondent who do not switch off the fan all day because of the heat in room.

For the practice on switch off the computer, all the participant have motivation to do that since they need to protect their laptop and so on because the cost for repair is high. However, most of the participant do not reduce the frequency of charging the phone since most of them using smart phone. Here is one of the respond from the participant.

: Depends..kalau sy online lebih guna henfon. Mmg 3-4 x sehari. Kalau sy online xbyk, mcm lebih guna laptop, sehari 1-2 kali cas.
Most of the participant practicing on switch off the light in toilet when no need to use and help to switch them off when their friend forgot to light off. They also agreed that the effort to save the energy is a self awareness based on reading, campaigns and educate from family.

Opinion on how to raise the awareness of energy efficiency among the student
From the interview, there are a few way can be execute to raise the awareness among the student such as organize more campaign on electric consumption, organize talk for college occupants, monitoring on student, and take action against students who bring electrical devices that are not allowed in college. The authorities should spread more information on energy efficiency and take serious action so that the student will be more motivate to practice the energy effiency.

DISCUSSIONS
This study shows that the level of awareness about energy efficiency among the student is even. Most of the college occupants do understand about how they really need to save energy but there are no motivation to do that. The college authorities should take more action to raise the student awareness and giving them some motivation to practice the energy with efficient. The student also should be more alert to the environment. They should behave to reduce the use of nonrenewable resource for the future generation.
