The History of Crossword Puzzles Crossword puzzles are the most popular word puzzle in the world. More than 40 million people in the U.S. do crossword puzzles every day.
It didn’t look like today’s crossword puzzles. It had no black squares. Wynne called it a “word cross puzzle.”

What is a Crossword Puzzle? A crossword puzzle is a word puzzle* in a grid* of black and white squares. The goal* is to write one letter in each white square to make the words given by clues*. The black squares tell where the word ends. This kind of puzzle is very popular. People buy magazines full of puzzles. Today, puzzles are often used in schools to help build vocabulary and spelling. Puzzles are a popular way to pass time while waiting or traveling. This book has beginner puzzles that have been specially made for English language learners.
One way to do a cross word puzzle a. Read the clue for number 1 ACROSS. b. Write the answer, starting in square number one in the puzzle. c. Write one letter in each blank square. The number of blank squares tells you how many letters are in the word. d. Use capital* letters. Print carefully. e. Use a pencil so you can erase letters if you made a mistake f. If you don’t know the answer to number one, skip it* and go to the next clue. g. Then read the clues for number 1 DOWN h. The letter in the answer for 1 ACROSS will be the same beg inning letter for 1 DOWN.
