ultimi anni,
una notevole
attenzionedapartedeiliutisti, meno dapartedeichitarristi. Ancoraoggi, infatti, dell'enormequantitddimusica lasciataci da Dowland gran parte d sconosciuta in ambito chitarristico, pur essendo di notevole valore strumentale e di sicuraefficaciadidatticaperil suo spessorecontrappuntistico.

The lute production of John Dowland (1562-1626) has recently arowsed great interest amongsl lutenists, but the same is not true of guitarists. Indeed, the enormous quantity of music left by the English composeris still largely unknotvnto the guitar environment in spite of its remarkable instrumentalvalue and proved teaching effectiveness owing to its interesting use of the counterpoint technique. Flis fantasia smake ttp a significant set of pieces, inthat they reveal the musicalpersonalhr- of this lateomposer.The scarci4,of editions.featuring guitartranscriptions of his fantasias in the present-day notation has prevented them.from being known and played - a regrettable omission, if

one considers that these remarkable and.fascinating compositions prove very usefulfor practising in
view of Conservatory examinations. Presenting this signiJicant part of Dowland's musical production in the modern nolation appeared tome as necessary andlong overdue in spite ofthe doubts expressedby musicologists and scholars aboul the attribution of some of these fantasias to the composer. His works have been classified according to the source of their manuscripts, which are preserved partllt at the British Museum, partly at the Cambridge University Library and partly at the Glasgow
UniversityLibrary. TheonlyfantasiapublishedwhenJohnDowlandwasstillaliveistheonecontained in the collection "Varietie of Lute Lessons" , printed by his son, Robert, in 16I0. Dowland's fantasias are presented in the following order: - from the first to the third: manuscripts preserved at the British Museum; - from the.fourth to the tenth: manuscripts presen-ed at the Cambridge University Library; - fo, the eleventh, the only work including one of Dowland's;fantasias printedwhen he was still ctlive, "Varietie of Lute Lessons", has been used, as mentioned above; i.e. the - fo, the twelfth, the manuscript preserved at the Glasgow University Library has been used. Thefingering suggested in this edition is intended to helping the reading, vt,hich is often quite dfficult at first sight. Accordingly, an attempt has been made at improving the taskfor the left hand, without disregarding the.fact that, in a good number of these pieces, the right-handfingering deserves special attention, too - sffice it to think of the Qpical alternate use of the thumb and the secondfinger in the lute -, although it is left to the performer's discretion. As the guitar does not have a seventh string tuned B, in aJbw occasions it has been necessary to transpose some of the notes of the lute's low register to the higher octave. In that case, they have been marked with an Sbct sign. The Annex provides some brief information on the sources of the manuscripts.

Appendice Fantasia no 1 L intavolatura di
questa fantasia si trova in piir fonti manoscritte presso 1l British Museum oltre ad essere presente con una propria fonte anche presso la Cambridge (Jniversir,,n Library e presso la Glasgow University Librarl,: quattro di esse sono per liuto a sette cori ed una sola per liuto a otto cori. La scelta d ricaduta su una versione del British Museum (Add. 31392-ff l3Y I4ll4V) che porta il titolo "A fantasie Maister Dowland". La notevole somiglianza di questa/antasia con quella pubblicata da Robert Dowland nella sua opera "Varietie of Lute Lessons", che ha goduto di molta attenzione da parte dei chitanisti, offrirh validi motivi di confronto.
Fantasia no 2 Il manoscritto di questa fantasia, di netto carattere cromatico, si trova presso il British Museum (Eg. 2046-f 23Y 124). Pur essendo privo della firma di Dowland, si attribuisce questo magnifico brano al liutista inglese data la stretta somiglianza con Ie ahre fantasie di carattere cromatico di certa attribuzione. Fantasia no 3 Qtestafantasla d I'ultima, nell'ordine della mia catalogazione empirica, ad avere il suo manoscritto presso il British .\[usettm (Add. 31392- f 24). Pur non comparendo la firma autografa di Dowland, 1'uso del tema iniziale della prima/rzntasia susgerisce che I'autore dovrebbe proprio essere il liutista inglese. Le ridotte proporzioni e la gib ricordata somiglianza con la primafontasiafanno di questo brano un motivo di curiositb e di "diletto musicale" ben lontano dalle complessitd armoniche e ,- tr n t rappuntistiche di alcune fant a s i e di D o wland. Fantasia no 4 "Farewell" b una parola ormai caduta in disuso nella lingua inglese il cui significato sta ad indicare il momento del distacco, Jeila separazione; propriamente si pub tradure con la parola "addio". Il manoscritto d conservato presso la Cambridge University Library (Dd.5.78.(3) (E)-ff 43V144), con titolo e firma della lino dello stesso Dowland. E un brano che ho fatto rientrare tra le fantasie, pur non riportando un tale titolo il manoscritto, per la stretta somiglianza ,'lila 1o sfruttamento del materiale compositivo (uso di scale cromatiche, imitazioni fra le parti ecc.) con altri brani espressaI:nte titolati "Fantasia". Fantasia no 5 Con la "Forlorn Hope Fancy" (Fantasia della speranza perduta) si apre il ciclo delle fantasie di Dowland il cui manoscritto - .-!rnservato presso la Cambridge University Library. Essa d intitolata "Forlorn Hope Fancye Mr Dowland Bach of Musicke" Dy.lT 16V/ l7). Di carattere cromatico, nel senso che inizia con un "tema" cromatico, in questo caso discendente, il brano si - rritterizza per una cellula di sei note che viene ripresa pii volte, sotto forme contrappuntistiche diverse. Di carattere scorrevole e vivace, si distacca da quelle di genere pii "impegnato" dal punto di vista contrappuntistico per assumere invece un carattere improvvisativo.

n' 10 Con questa fantasia si conclude il ciclo di sette brani che hanno la loro fonte manoscritta presso la Cambridge University Library. E questo un brano di incerta attribuzione a Dowland, in quanto il manoscritto (Dd.9.33 (C) -ff 44V l45l45l) b senza titolo ed anonimo, ma lo si ritiene di sua appaftenenza per le caratteristiche musicali che presenta e che competono al bagaglio tecnico-compositivo del compositore inglese. Questa fantasia presenta nel finale una serie di note ribattute che "accompagnano" la melodia nei registri medio-gravi, rappresentando uno dei primi esempi di "tremolo".

E, questo il brano di Dowland che forse ha avuto maggior spazio nei repertori chitarristici, sebbene accompagnato da una discutibile classificazione; quella di "Fantasia no 7"; il numero sette infatti d riferito all'elenco di brani riporlati nella "Varietie" che b un antologia di opere di pi[ compositori e non pud quindi essere riferito ad una logica catalogazione delle fantasie di Dowland.
Fantasia no 12 (Jniversity Library G.d.43 The Euing euest'ultim afantasia d I'unica ad essere tratta dalle fonti presentr alla Glasgow Lute Book-ff 42Y 143);non d di sicura attribuzione a Dowland, tuttavia le caratteristiche costruzioni cromatiche e polifoniche evidenziate in altre fantasie e ladimostrazione di una profonda conoscenza delle risorse tecnico-strumentali del liuto, inducono ad attribuirne la paternitd al compositore inglese.

The tablature oJ this fantasia can be found in several manuscripts preserved at the Bitish Museum as well as in two rnanuscripts owned by the Cambridge University Library and the Glasgow University Library respectively. Four of them v'ere intendedfor a seven-string lute and only onefor an eight-string lute. TheBritish Museum's version (Add.31392ff l3V I4|I4V) entitled "A fantasie Maister Dowland" w-as chosen. The remarkable similarities between this fantasia cutd the one published by Robert Dowland in his work "Varietie of Lute Lessons", highh,praised by guitarists, will
€ncourage valuable comparisons.
Fantasia n" 2 The manwscript of this fantasia, of a clearly chromatic character, can be fottnd at the British Museum (Eg. 2046-f 23Y124). Although it does not bear Dowland's signature, this beautiful piece is attributed to the English lutenist because oJ' its close resemblance to the other chromatic fantasias which undoubtedly belong to the composer.
Fantasia no 3 According to m_y empirical classification, this is the last fanta,sitt preserved in manttscript at the British Museum t\dd. 3I392-f24). Although it does not bear Dowland's signature, its use oJ'the same opening theme as the first tontctsia suggests that the author should indeed be the English lutenist. Its short duration and the previously mentioned sitrilarities with the first fantasia make it a curious and "pleasctnt" piece far from the harmonic and contrapuntal cotrtplexities of some of Dowland's fantasias. Fontasia n" 4 " Farewell" is a rather old-fashioned word, which refers to the moment in which hro or more people port, separate. Irt sltort, it means "goodbye". The manuscript can be found at the Cambridge University Library (Dd.S.78.(3) (F.)-ff 43V/44), wirh Dowland's title Litt(l signature.

Fantasia no 5 Tlte "Forlorn Hope Fancy" starts the set ofDowland's fcmtasias whose mnnuscripts are owned by the Cambridge Unrversity Library. The manuscript o.f this fourth composition bears the following title: "Forlorn Hope Fancye Mr Dotrlrmd Bach of Musicke" (Dg.ff 16Y111). This fantasia, which can be qualified as "chromatic" in that it opens with u descending chromatic "theme", is based on a six note cell repeated several times in dffirent contrapuntal Jbrms. Fantasia n" 6 This composition by John Dovvland is preserved in manttscript at the Cambridge University Library (ADD. 3056-ff l7V/18). It has no title but specirtes the name of the author, "J. Dowland".
Fantasia no 7 This "Fantasy Mr Dowlande" (Cambridge University Library, Add 3056-1T 7Y18) is the product of happy and vivid rttttsical inventiveness, constcLntly supported b1t a deep knowledge oJ the harmonic-r:ontrapuntal po,ssibilities of the lute.
Fantasia no 8 This piece bectrs the original title "Farewell", like one ctf the corupositions described above. The manuscripl reads: "Farewell Jo. Dowland" (Cambridge University Library, Dd.9.33. (C)-ff 41Y142). This fantasia is markecl by the almost constant presence of two identical notes in each bar creating the same rh1t7l1*1, Pattern.
Fantasia n" 9 The manuscript of this Fancy (fantasia) is preserved cLt the Cambridge University Library (Dd.g.33.(C)-ff 6V/7/7V) vvith the title "A.fancy Jo Dctw". Lively and smooth, it sets itself apart from his most contrapuntal.ly "committed" fantasias as it takes on an improviscttional character.

Fantasia n" l0 This fantasia closes the set of seven compositions preserved in manuscript at the Cambridge University Library. Its attribution to Dowland is uncertain, as the manuscript (Dd.9.33 (C)-tf 44V145145) bears no title and is anonymous. Yet, it is included among his works because of its musical features, which appear to belong to the composer's own technicalcompositional approach. In its final part, this fantasia shows a series of reiterated notes " accompanying" the melody in the medium-low registers and representing one of the first examples of "tremolo". Fantasin no 77 This is the only fantasia taken from a printed source, i.e. the "Varietie of Lute Lessons" by John Dowland's son, Robert. This is an anthology of compositions pennedby dffirent lutenists of that time whichwas published in 1610. Although this work bears a very close resemblance to the first fantasia of this collection, the desire to draw a comprehensive picture of this major segment of John Dowland's musical production has urged me to include it as well. Amongst Dowland's compositions, this is perhaps the one which has been devoted the largest space in the guitar repertories, though questionably classffied as "Fantasi a noT ". As a matter of fact, the number seven is used in the list of the pieces contained in the "Varietie" - which is an anthology of works by dffirent composers - and cannot therefore apply to a logic clas sific ation of D ow land's fantasias.
Fantasia n" 12 This last fantasia is the only one taken from the sources presertted at the Glasgow University Library (R.d.43 The Euing Lute Book-ff 42V143). It cannot be attributed with certainty to Dowland, although the signature chromatic and polyphonic structures featured in other fantasias and the evidence of a great mastery of the technical-instrumental possibilities of the lute would point to the English composer as the author of this work.
