READING (10 marks) THE NOTTING HILL CARNIVAL
In multicultural England, there are a lot of different festivals. People celebrate the Notting Hill Carnival in London during the last weekend of August. August. There are big processions through the city. People wear fantastic costumes and they dance in the streets. Musicians play drums and people sing songs called “soca”. Disc jockeys also play music in the street (it’s very loud!!) Immigrants from the Caribbean started the carnival in 1964. Now lots of people can participate in the carnival and two million people celebrate it every ev ery year. y ear. If you can’t travel to Rio de Janeiro or Tenerife, you can come to the Notting Hill Carnival! It’s a fantastic party with great music, fabulous costumes, and delicious food – you can eat some typical typical Caribbean Caribbean dishes like curry goat and fish burgers. The proposed dates for Notting Hill Carnival 2011 are August 28th and 29th. The Carnival Bands play from around 9am on Sunday 29th August and the same time on Monday 30th of August. Sunday is Children’s day and Monday is Adults day. The Carnival parade completes its procession by 9pm. There are a number of parking restrictions and road closures, so the best way to travel to the Carnival is by public transport.
