TV Dramas are generally scripted to reflect the life of their intended audience,
and primarily being broadcasted in a series, the audience tends to grow with the characters and feel like they can relate to the issues on screen. Content will generally always be realistic and applicable to real life situations, and you as an audience are led to believe that what you see on-screen can c an happen in real life (Betchley, 2011). Korean Drama (Hanguk (Hanguk Deurama) or K- Drama refers to televised dramas in Korean language, made in South Korea, mostly in a miniseries format, with distinctive features that set them apart from television series and soap operas made elsewhere. Korean dramas can be set to contemporary times to historical times (Korean, (Korean, 2017). As Korean cultures’ cultures’ popularity increases, many people gets addicted to their culture and we call this addiction as Korean Wave. Korean Wave includes it

all, the addiction to Korean Popstars, Korean Dramas, Korean Styles, Korean Foods and anything about Korean that has been an addiction to the people especially to the youths. Korean Dramas started as radio drama, it began in 1927 under the Japanese rule. Years later, in 1956, Korea launched television broadcasting but was shut down after a few years later due to a fire. Until years later again, Korean Broadcasting System relaunch. The first ever national television channel was Korean Broadcasting System (KBS), which started up in 1961. The first Korean television film was a 15-minute piece titled The Gate of Heaven on HLKZ-TV. The first television series was also aired by KBS in 1962. Until then Korean Dramas became popular all over the world (Kalbi, 2016).
Korean approach faster throughout other countries, specifically here in the Philippines. Korean Dramas began to be air in the Philippines in 2003, with shows such as Bright Girl, Autumn in my Heart, Lovers in Paris and My girl ( 5 reasons why Korean Drama are popular among Filipinos, 2017). Until then, Filipinos started to love Korean Dramas because of the creativity of the story, the setting added more attraction to the audience as well as its actors. Watching K-drama has been a hobby for the Filipinos especially for teenagers. This study aims to know if the students who are K-drama addicts do have techniques on how to manage their time between watching K-drama and

studying. Hence, is it a destruction or an inspiration to the students? Does it affect their academic responsibilities? Statement of the Problem Korean Drama Addiction is very common nowadays. Some of Senior High School Students are affected by the said addiction. This study aims to know if Korean Drama addiction affects Senior High School Students’ academic responsibilities positively or negatively. 1. Does Korean Drama interfere with your academic responsibilities? 2. Does Korean Drama affects you positively or negatively? 3. Do you know how to overcome Korean Drama Addiction if your academic responsibilities are being affected? Korean have best of the best Korean stars but there is always someone who will be on the top. The top 1 Korean actor is, Kim Soo Hyun, while the top 1 Korean Actress is Jeon Ji Hyun. They are two of the phenomenal stars of Korean Dramas. The two shared one drama entitled, My Love from Another Star. The drama portrays how to love someone unconditionally even they are not from the same planet. Although it is a fantasy, many believed that their love from each other is real. This drama was a big hit to the Korean Entertainment Industry because of the plenty of purchase demands from other countries to each episode of the drama (Top 20 Korean actors and actresses according to industry insiders, 2014).

Korean Dramas have different genre, these genres includes, romance, romance comedy, fantasy, history, crime, horror, etc. (Korean Drama, 2016). These Korean Drama genre attracts the audience because of the flow of the story including its actors and actresses. But above all the genre, romance genre is having a different connection between the audience and the actors. Romance genre makes people relate themselves to the characters of the drama. Why do people love Korean Drama? It is because Korean Drama is considered as an escape from reality, such as to those who are finding love. The recurrent theme of romance allows viewers to give themselves up temporarily to enjoy the feelings of love without regard for consequences or practical concerns, deriving vicarious pleasures in their consumption of media (Mee,2016). Singles who are addicted to Korean Drama finds temporary feeling of love by watching K-Drama. Although they are not in a relationship but by merely watching K-Dramas they can feel that they are the female lead, and that they feel that they are loved. While those who are in a relationship who are watching Korean Dramas realize what is the true meaning of love such as how they will have strategies or efforts to show how they love someone or how they care for them. Korean Dramas does not fully change the concept of girls when it comes to love but influence them in some ways. Korean Drama is evolving every now and then, most female audience can relate themselves to the story which somehow affect their views about love (Fu & Chang, 2015).

Korean Actors do really affect female audience because of their appeal and how they act. Female audience idolize them, to the point that they expect that they will have someone like those Korean actors someday. Not only Filipino women are being affected by Korean Drama Addiction, but as well as the Filipino Children. According to Rappler News Philippines, during year 2015, My love from the star became the number 1 favorite foreign drama of the Filipino children based on the conducted study by National Council for Children’s Television (Geronimo, 2015). Popularity of Korean Drama not just affect teenagers but also children. The study was conducted year 2015. As time goes by, popularity of Korean Drama increases what more after 4 years, 5 years, and so on. Celebrity worship apparently is a significant behavioral phenomenon that dominates some people’s lives. Korean stars are idols to be w orshiped by Asian people today (McCutcheon, 2011). Celebrity worship phenomenon are mostly common to girls. Girls tends to buy things or merchandise as way of showing their support to their bias or idols. Korean Drama Addiction has its advantage and disadvantages. The advantages are: Korean Dramas use appropriate language, they’re not fond of using harsh words or foul words. Korean Drama gives people the opportunity to learn about a new culture and language, allowing people to respect other’s culture. People can also gain friends with similar interest.

While there are some disadvantages: Teens spend too much time watching K-Drama, searching information about Korean Stars, as a result they lack sleep, staying up late and skipping meals. It can cause them by having eye diseases, memory loss, or even tend to be depression prone and autism-prone. They can also suffer from physical mental, and psychological problem because of heavy K-Drama Addiction. It can also distract their studies. Spending too much money to buy their album or Korean merchandise. Sometimes they also get too emotionally attached with the drama (Abd, 2015). Korean stars are very appealing to the eye of the viewers. Viewers are very devoted to their Korean bias, to the point that they are willing to spend too much money, too much time, too much effort just to show how they really love Koreans. The search traffic analyzed is about 274 out of 500 works that have been broadcast since 2000. The combined number of clicks for the K-pop and soap operas shows that overseas interest in the Korean Wave has shot up over the past five years, though its rate of increase has slowed slightly. With dramas leading the initial surge in the 2000s, there were not many clicks for K-pop until the middle of the decade. But clicks rose sharply after 2009, when overseas tours of Korean idol groups began to increase. But their boom slowed down somewhat in 2013. Interest in Korean dramas rose drastically after 2009. The clicks slowed down in 2012, but have recently rebounded (Lee, 2014).

Korean Drama’s popularity increases and reached the heart of every Filipino women. Filipinos are one of the top visitors of South Korea this year because of Korean Drama. They want to witness what it is to be in the main place where the Korean Dramas were shoot. Airline linkage has also been on an upswing with 150 flights between the Philippines and South Korea on a weekly basis, or more than 20 flights every day said Lee. But it’s not just Filipinos who visits South Korea but as well as the Koreans. Since 2006 Koreans are the top visitor of the Philippines followed by Americans who dominated the ranking (Yap, 2017). Korean’s president is very delighted because of the intact relationship between Korea and Philippines. Especially now that Korean Drama influences the Filipinos to support Korean Cultures, as well as their actors and actresses including their products. Due to Korean Dramas’ popularity and because it’s convenient many people tend to watch it. These people include the students who have academic responsibilities. This study will know whether the addiction to Korean Dramas affect the academic responsibilities of the Senior High School Students. The study will know if it is an inspiration or a distraction to the students. Methods The research methodology includes the research design, data gathering methods, samples or respondents in the study, the planned analysis and the research locale that will be use in the study. Causal-comparative is the chosen

research design for the study for it attempts to establish cause-effect relationships among variables of the study. Hence, causal-comparative research design is applicable to the study because it will determine if Korean Drama addiction affects Senior High School Students’ academic responsibility positively or negatively. The study will use convenience sampling of Non-Probability Sampling for it will only have volunteers and existing groups as the participants of the study. Ten students will be the sample or respondents of the research and only those who watch Korean Drama will be selected as the respondent. The study will use Survey Questions as way of gathering data. St. Dominic College of Asia will be the research locale because it is more convenient. A careful analyzation will be needed for the study, so it will have a good, clear and unbiased results. 50% of the respondents are first introduced to K -Pop before Korean Drama while the other 50% are introduced to Korean 18%Drama at the very start (as seen on Figure 1). As seen on Figure 2, 50% of the respondents’ favorite genre of Korean 9%
Drama is Romance, therefore we can see that most of the students are fond of 73% Genre and most of them watch Korean watching Korean Drama Romance
Drama 3-5 times and everyday in a month (as seen on Figure 3). Studying Korean language are convenient nowadays which make it easier to learn, most of the respondents adapt Korean language on their daily lifestyle because of Korean Drama (as seen on figure 4). Half of the respondents are addicted to Korean Drama. Most of them watch Korean Drama even they have

school works however 70% of them proves that even they watch Korean Drama even when they have school works, they still manage not to let Korean Drama interfere with their academic responsibilities (as seen on Figures 5,6 & 7). On Figure 8, the respondents were asked if they can overcome Korean Drama addiction if it’s interfering on their academic responsibility, 50% of them answered yes. 50% of the respondents never tried to watch Korean Drama when they have a bunch of school works, furthermore Korean Drama serves as entertainment to most of the respondents, thus Korean Drama does not affect their academic responsibility at all (as seen on Figures 9, 10 & 11). Discussion Before being addicted to Korean Drama, Senior High School students are addicted to K- Pop then, Korean Drama came, and they got addicted to both. According to Abd, teens who are addicted to Korean Drama are prone to depression because they stay up late watching Korean Drama which contradicts the result of the study, because the results of the study shows that Korean Drama is just an entertainment for them, some considered it as their stress-reliever. Almost all the respondents considered themselves as a Korean Drama addict however, this addiction does not affect their academic responsibilities. Furthermore, Abd also stated that Korean Drama is a distraction to their studies which contradicts the result of the study. Senior High School Students academic responsibilities are not being affected by the said addiction, thus it serves as an entertainment for

them. Hence, it also serves as their escape to all the stress and school works. The study found out that the addiction to Korean Drama does not really affect the academic responsibility of Senior High School Students even they spend too much time watching Korean Dramas they still manage their time or balance their time between watching Korean Drama and doing their school works. As the research illustrates, almost all the students are positively affected by Korean Drama even though they considered themselves as Korean Drama Addicts, they know how to prioritize things such as their academic responsibilities. The study also found out that Korean Drama somehow helps the students to relieve their stress on their school works. As the results were tallied and analyzed, the study found out that Korean Drama is not a distraction, hence it is just a mere entertainment on the academic responsibility.
