In 2004, Mark Zuckerberg, Dustin Moskovitz and Cristopher Hughes, three Harvard University students, launched a Web site designed to put tutors in touch with one another, share their e-mails and meet new people. They called it thefacebook.com, and before long the site became extremely popular on the Harvard campus. A month after the site launched, the creators explained it to exclude students from Stanford, Columbia and Yale. By 2005, students in 800 college networks across the United States could join the network, and its relationship grew to more than 5 billion active users. In August of that year, the site's name changed to Facebook. Facebook was originally intended for college students, but today anyone can join the network. Although the site's scope has expanded to include more than just students, its purpose remains the same giving people a way to share information in an easy and entertaining why. Like MySpace, Facebook is a social networking site.

When my husband and I got married three years ago, we moved across the country and packed the bare essentials. We left many things, including his TV in Nashville for others to use. And here we are, three years later, still without a television in our home. At first, we were excited to go without a TV because we knew it would save us money on our electric bill and cable bill. After a few months without it, we grew to love the silence it brought. Our nights were spent reading together, and cooking. Before we knew it, we hardly noticed we did not have a television. And even today, I forget we live a little differently until I get blank stares from people when I tell them I did not see the latest show because we do not have a TV in our home. Family and friends have tried to pawn off old TV’s on us because they have felt like we were missing out on something. We keep turning them down, and will continue to turn them down. The truth is, we feel like we have something they don’t. Because we do not own a TV, our minds and our lives have more space in them. I have more space to imagine, create and write. I have more space to spend intentional time with friends when they come and visit. We do not have the temptation to fill the void of silence with something on television. Instead, we talk, we engage… And we cook. http://www.thetinytwig.com/2013/02/26/could-you-give-up-television/ (Accessed in April, 2013)

Who could have predicted that a communications system designed to serve scientists and the military would one day help Aunt Sylvia uncover a blue-ribbon cake recipe or help you track down your favourite high-school classmate? The Internet is an unprecedented gateway to a vast wealth of knowledge and information, and its uses are virtually unlimited. The WorldWide Web, although still young, is deeply ingrained in our culture and everyday lives. It’s a source of news, facts, and figures; a communication tool that allows millions of us to connect with each other every second of every day; a way to bank, invest, and shop; and an educational and entertainment medium that allows people from all walks of life to learn about the world and have fun doing it. Especially promising are the marvellous advantages that the Internet offers children, including access to educational materials, publications, online friendships, pen pals, subject-matter experts, and information on hobbies, games, and sports. There’s no question that many of today’s kids benefit enormously from online access — often in ways different from their parents’ use of it. As indispensable as it is in today’s society, however, the Internet is also a reflection of society, good and bad. The easy access to information that makes the Web so special is also at the root of parental and community concerns about children’s exposure to inappropriate materials and experiences. Realworld threats like hate speech, religious cults, harassment, and stalking exist in cyberspace. Particularly alarming for many parents are pornography and sexual predators. It’s easy for a parent to think, “Maybe I’ll just keep my kids offline entirely.” This might be the best guarantee for safety, but is it a practical solution? Children can access the Internet from a number of places outside of the home. In addition, the Internet is such a helpful educational resource that denying children access to it could put them at a disadvantage as they prepare for their own future. http://www.nap.edu/netsafekids/internet.html (Accessed in April 2013) 4x3p=12p.

Module 4.3 Ethics Name No. Class Date
1. Read the text carefully. Online ethics
5

The era of the Internet has introduced many new dimensions to the study and practice of ethics. Online ethics refers to patterns of behaviour used when on the Internet, guided both by law and personal philosophy. The great capabilities of this communication medium allow for the potential of great harm, cruelty, and even crime. Major concerns in the field of online ethics include the protection of private information, the limits of a presumed freedom of expression, and issues of defamation. Understanding legal ramifications and trusting personal philosophy used in other areas of life can help a person determine his or her online ethics. Possibly one of the most alluring promises of the Internet is its ability to create anonymity. On discussion boards, blogs, and through various email addresses, a person can easily create dozens of personas, each accessible to different people. But one of the most pervading moral questions of online ethics regards the difference between protecting anonymity and deceiving others. To a certain extent, withholding personal details is a wise idea on the web. Posting contact information or financial data is an unfortunate way to attract identity thieves or fraudsters, leaving the user and family members vulnerable to crime. Many social networking sites provide extensive privacy options that allow users to determine the amount of personal data visible. While protecting personal information is considered by many to be reasonable, anonymity can also shift from protective to abusive quite easily. http://www.wisegeek.com/what-are-online-ethics.htm

IN THE SPACE of one hour, my entire digital life was destroyed. My Google account was taken over, then deleted. My Twitter account was compromised and used to broadcast racist and homophobic messages. And worst of all, my Apple ID account was broken into, and hackers erased all of the data on my iPhone, iPad, and MacBook, including irreplaceable pictures of my family. In many ways, this was my fault. My accounts were connected. Once the hackers got my Amazon password, they were able to get into my Apple ID account, which helped them get into Gmail, which gave them access to Twitter. If I had used two-step verification on my Google account (which sends a second password for your account to your cellphone), none of this would have happened, because the hackers' ultimate goal, I later found out, was simply to take over my Twitter account and cause chaos. If I had regularly backed up the data on my MacBook, I wouldn't have had to worry about losing more than a year's worth of photos – my daughter's whole life – or documents and emails that I had stored in no other location. Those security lapses are my fault, and I deeply regret them. http://theweek.com/article/index/234702/digital-nightmare-how-hackers-ruined-my-online-life (Accessed in April 2013)
