OVERVIEW

The MP1 is a microprocessor controlled control panel to be used in conjunction with X-ray Generators manufactured by Gulmay Ltd. The panel can be set to run with a variety of X-ray Tubes and generators by switch selecting different positions in a Tube personality EPROM. The panel interfaces directly to the generator through one connection. The panel interfaces to a mains supply distribution unit which can incorporate safety interlocking, cooler interfacing and warning lamps. The design of such a unit is suggested in the LAB I/O BOX circuit and description. This can only be an indication of the capability. GULMAY CANNOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR INTERPRETING THE PREVAILING SAFETY REQUIREMENTS FOR INSTALLED X-RAY SYSTEMS.

Each Generator/X-Ray Tube combination can have up to 4 warm up routines pre programmed at the factory. A real time clock in the MP1 then determines the most suitable, in line with the recommendations of the X-Ray tube manufacturer. The panel is capable of operating in the following modes:Manual

Bipolar generators and X-Ray Tubes are allowed for in the data tables stored in the MP1. The Generator, when installed as a bipolar signals its status to the MP1. The panel has an RS232 connector built in. This allows monitoring of the MP1 status at all times. A special mode can be selected which allows for external control of the panel including initiation and termination and technique selection. Provision is made in the LAB I/O box interface for remote initiation and termination of X-Rays to enable the panel to be integrated into an automated system. There are two prewarn intervals. The first is always counted and the second is only counted in the event of the safety 2 line being interrupted.


OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

(SEE FIG 1.0 FOR MP1 PANEL LAYOUT) 1/

KEYSWITCH (SW)

There are three positions : 1 - NO POWER SWITCHED ON IN UNIT. 2 - MAINS ON 3 - HT ON ENABLE 2/

X-RAY ON (SW)

This is a green illuminated push button switch. With the Key switch in position 3 and with all safety circuits closed, the X-RAY ON sequence will be initiated. 3/

X-RAY OFF (SW)

This is a red illuminated push button switch. Terminates the X-RAY ON mode at any time. Does not reset the elapsed time display. 4/

MAINS ON (IND)

kV CONTROL (POTENTIOMETER)

This control is used to pre indicate and control the value of the high voltage output in the manual programming mode. See programming modes. 9/

mA CONTROL (POTENTIOMETER)

This control is used to pre indicate and control the value of the output current in two of the manual programming modes. See programming modes. 10/

TIME CONTROL (POTENTIOMETER)

This control is used to set the exposure duration in two of the manual programming modes. See programming modes. 11/

AUTO WATT (IND)

This indication shows that the output current is being limited to the maximum allowable under the X-Ray tube characteristic. This can occur in the programmed or manual Auto Watt modes or when the operator selects a load current in excess of that allowed by the X- Ray tube and focus combination. 12/

FINE (IND)

This is illuminated whenever the Fine/alternate focal spot is successfully selected. 17/

CLEAR (SW)

This switch will reset the exposure time to its initial value if the exposure has been terminated, only if the key switch is in position 3. The switch will begin an update sequence for the data stored in a specific programme. The key switch must be in position 2 and some programmes will not have date which you can change, e.g. the warm up routines. 18/

SET (SW)

This switch is used when the key switch is in position 2 to set a new programme. After pressing SET a new programme number can be keyed in. Pressing the ENTER button on the Keypad signifies you have finished entering the new programme number. A set of techniques will now be displayed if they have been pre programmed to that number. Pressing CLEAR at this time will allow you to re programme the techniques stored in that programme number.

mA DISPLAY

This is a 3 Digit 13mm high LED display, the last digit indicates tenths. Prior to initiating the X-RAY ON sequence the mA display will show the value of the mA that will be output. This value will be determined by differing factors; a) The mA control setting in manual mode. b) The mA programme setting in programme mode. c) The initial point in warm up mode. At the start of the Prewarn mode the display will be switched to read the actual mA monitor signal and should therefore be zero. 22/

TIME DISPLAY

This is a 3 Digit 13mm high LED display, the last digit indicates tenths. The display output shows the length of exposure time remaining in decimal minutes. In fluoro modes the display will show elapsed time. In other modes, prior to initiating the X-RAY ON sequence, the display will indicate the exposure time. During the Prewarn mode the display will show the exposure time. After the beginning

PROGRAMMING METHOD

Pressing SET when the key switch is in position 2 will cause the Programme display to flash. The display will be updated from the right most digit as you key in new numbers. You can continue to key in numbers until the correct 3 are displayed, you signify acceptance by pressing the ENTER button. The other displays will now display the techniques stored under this programme number. You can change these by now pressing CLEAR and updating the 3 displays in the same manner as the programme number. You press ENTER as you reach an acceptable figure and the display will stop flashing and the next one will start to flash. If you key in a number which is outside the specification of the X- Ray tube and/or focal spot then the number you have chosen will be clipped to the maximum allowed. For instance if Programme 233 is loaded as 100kV 30mA 10 min., when the BROAD focus is selected, it will be accepted. If you select FINE the mA will be clipped to say 6.4mA but the programme value will not be altered. If you tried to programme 100kV and 30mA when FINE was selected then the mA would be clipped to 6.4mA and this would be the stored value. If a programme is keyed in with FINE selected it will automatically select FINE when recalled. To select FINE as part of a programme press the Focus select after pressing CLEAR.

DIFFERENT X-RAY TUBES

Each panel has an internal PCB socket for a tube personality EPROM that contains range limits tables for one or more focal spots on the supplied tube. This EPROM will also contain auto-warm up tables for the supplied tube. The tube selection EPROM is designated MP1 T Rev xx. To select a different tube and generator combination the switch SW1 must be changed on the CPU PCB, See Table 4 for Application Data and Table 5 for SW1 Positions.


INSTALLATION AND INTERFACING REQUIREMENTS INSTALLATION

The generator should be installed in accordance with the manufacturers recommendation. The X-Ray tube should be installed in accordance with the manufacturers recommendation. The MP-1 Control Panel should have a suitable (20A rated) earth attached to the 6mm terminal on the rear panel. The MP-1 should then be connected to the generator and a suitable interface unit. CHECK THAT SW1 ON THE CPU PCB IS SET FOR THE CORRECT TUBE AND GENERATOR COMBINATION. INTERFACING REQUIREMENTS

A suggested circuit for the interface unit (LAB I/O BOX) is shown on drawing MP3-042 and


INITIALISING THE MP1

On the C.P.U. Board, set switch bank SW1 to the required setting. 1.

CALIBRATION This procedure should only be required at initial test. The Engineering switch (POS8 on SW1 on the CPU PCB) must be switched to on to allow calibration. Connect a DVM to the I/O PCB between TP13 (+ lead) and TP11 (- lead), set the DVM to 20V FSD and turn the key to position 2. Press SET & 900 & ENTER, a figure should appear in the kV display window. On older issue PCBs without TP13 the connection is to D38 anode. Hit the CLEAR button. The display should flash. Load the digital number (3 digits no point) into the MP1 that the DVM displays and press ENTER. The DVM should now return to 0V. If a voltage is entered which is less than 7.80 volts and greater than 8.2V then the MP1 will indicate an error E38. After a successful calibration, reset the Engineering switch to off.

CUMULATIVE X RAY HOURS Press SET,913,ENTER The total X Ray On time will be displayed as xxx xx.d hours in the mA and Time displays.

WARM UP POWER Press SET,918,ENTER Press CLEAR enter a 3 digit number between 010 and 100 which represents the percent of full power that all warm ups will be run at. Press ENTER

ADVISORY DATE You may set a date which can act as a service reminder. When this date is reached the Code "A1" will flash for 10 seconds at power up in the PROGRAMME/ERROR display.

DATE FORMAT You may set a new date format depending on your national standard or preference. This modified date display will be used in Engineering codes 909, 912 and 920. To check the current standard: Press SET, 941, ENTER. The display will read 1 of 3 ways, STD, ISO or USA. The shipping default is STD. To change the format: Press CLEAR and 0,1 or 2 where they represent the following:Enter

When dates are entered under Engineering codes 909 or 920 then when CLEAR is pressed the flashing display alternates between the format and the value. 17.

FILAMENT SELECT LOCK There are some X Ray Tubes available with identical filaments. The Table data programmed by Gulmay allows Warming Up on either spot. It may desirable to prevent customer use of the second focal spot until the first one is worn out or failed. To enable this a filament select lock has been added which is only effective on those tables that allow warming on either spot. To enable this feature: Press,SET,948,ENTER

FILAMENT LIMIT Modifying the setting of RV1 on the I/O PCB can reduce the Filament limit setting on some types of Generator.

RS232 CONNECTIONS AND SETTING

SETTINGS The RS232 interface is set to 9600 baud, 8 bits with 1 start bit and at least 1 stop bit. The most significant bit of the 8 is ignored and no handshake lines or software start/stop protocols are used.

INTERCONNECTION DIAGRAM

This drawing details the connections in the MP1. At the top can be seen the three interface connections. The left hand connector, the RS232, is not required for normal operation. The Generator I/O Connector has to be connected via an external cable to the generator. The Lab I/O Box Connector has to be connected via an external cable to the Lab I/O Box. There are four principal circuit boards. I/O PCB

This contains all protection and 24V interface circuitry for the LAB I/O, Generator and RS232 link. All signals are then processed on the CPU PCB with the exception of the power and front panel switch connections.

CPU PCB

This PCB processes all signals from the above mentioned PCB and also interfaces to the DISPLAY PCB.

DISPLAY PCB

This PCB mounts on the inside of the MP1 front panel and includes the LED displays and the keyboard.

PSU PCB

This PCB rectifies, smoothes and regulates the +24V DC, +5V DC and +12V DC supplies.

The power rating of the AC supply depends on the type of Generator being controlled. That shown implies a 3kW system with allowances for additional power to a cooler, the controller and warning lamps. Contactor K1 is energised when the KEYSWITCH on the panel is in position 2 and 3. The connection is made via pins D and E. When energised power is switched to the panel via B and C and also to the cooler and as auxiliary power to the Generator (220V AUX). Contactor K2 is energised via a relay and key switch in the panel and this is the 220V MAIN supply to the Generator. K2 is energised via pin F and a sense signal is returned as +24V DC via pin H. THIS SUPPLY FEEDS THE EHT PRODUCING PART OF THE GENERATOR. THIS SUPPLY CAN BE ADDITIONALLY INTERLOCKED BY FEEDING TO THE GENERATOR VIA A DOOR SWITCH.


I/O PCB CIRCUIT DIAGRAM

This drawing is divided into three sheets. SHEET 1 PL2 interfaces to the LAB I/O BOX. SK2 interfaces to the Generator. SK1 interfaces to the CPU PCB. Safety 1 and 2 are both returned as +24V DC by the safety circuits in the installation via the LAB I/O BOX. Cooler 'TEMP' and 'FLOW' are both returned as +24V DC by the sense circuits in the cooler via the LAB I/O BOX. HT Contactor sense is returned as +24V DC when the HT contactor is energised in the LAB I/O BOX. All the above signals are clamped by 12V zeners and then they source current into the optodiodes of isolators. The isolator outputs source current from the +5V DC logic supply and are then diode clamped and filtered before being buffered by schmitt inverters which interface


The PRE WARN signal at SK1-16 energises the relay RL2 via IC1:C and IC4:C to switch an external supply to a PRE WARN lamp. The signal is present prior to the X-RAY ON period. This signal is normally switching on and off at 1Hz but may be continuous. The duration of PRE WARN depends on panel settings and whether SAFETY-2 has been interrupted. (See engineering modes) On Issue 3 PCBs the relay RL2 has been replaced by solid state relay SSR2 and the front panel PRE WARN indicator is driven by TR3. The X-RAY ON (CONTROL) signal at SK1-21 does two things. It sends a 12V DC signal to the Generator at SK2-2, this signal is normally routed via LK1 but there is a provision for a remote bulb fail circuit in the LAB I/O Box to switch this line via PL2-7 and 8. The signal also energises the bulb in the X-RAY ON switch on the panel via IC13:A and TR1 and PL4-2. The INTERLOCK signal does three things. It energises the lamp in the SAFETY indicator via IC1:E, IC4:E and PL4-5. From the same node it also energises RL3 only if the SAFETY-1 line is returned as +24V DC. When RL3 is energised a +12V DC INTERLOCK signal is sent to the Generator via SK2- 8. The KEYSWITCH is connected between PL4-1 and 12. This is the contact made when the KEYSWITCH is in position 3. Turning the KEY to this position will energise RL4 only if the SAFETY-2 line is returned as +24V DC and the interlock relay RL3 is energised. Energising RL4 will switch on the external HT ON relay in the LAB I/O Box. This will connect the MAIN


SHEET 3 The RS232 interface connector PL1 is protected by series zeners and is sourced from the CPU PCB. The three analogue outputs from the panel are kV-DEMAND, mA-DEMAND and FIL-LIMIT. The first two are sourced from the CPU PCB and connected to the Generator via SK2-22 and SK2-10. The latter is set by RV1 (MAX=+12V DC) and connected to the Generator via SK2-9. The three analogue inputs from the Generator are mA-MONITOR, kV- MONITOR and the 12V REFERENCE. These are connected to the CPU PCB. The power from the PSU PCB is input in PL3. The test points, protection zeners and decoupling capacitors are shown. All power for the CPU PCB is routed from the PSU PCB via the I/O PCB. The outputs to the CPU PCB are shown in SK1.


CPU PCB CIRCUIT DIAGRAM

SHEET 1 The CPU PCB has two main connectors, PL4 connects to the DISPLAY PCB and PL1 which connects to the I/O PCB. There are two connectors for future expansion, PL2 and PL3. At the top of Sheet 1 part of PL4 is shown with the power supply from the CPU PCB to the DISPLAY PCB and the interface to the keyboard. The keys are normally open circuit and their outputs are pulled up by resistor arrays RU1 and RU2. The keys are read by the Parallel Input/Output (PIO) IC, IC12. The power on reset circuit for the processor, IC3, comprises R5, D3 and C2. On power up this holds the reset pin IC3-6 low allowing all associated devices to power up before the processor initialises. A 1MHz signal is output at IC3-40 and is labelled E. This is input to IC4 which is a counter configured to divide by 13. This counter output at IC4-11 is the clock for the RS232 and is input to the processor at IC3-10. The processor outputs to the RS232 at IC3-11 and inputs at IC3-12. These are 5V signals which are converted to +/- 12V by the RS232 interface device IC5. The output of IC5 is connected to PL1 on the I/O PCB via PL1 on the CPU PCB and SK1 on the I/O PCB. IC1:B is a resettable mono stable which if not reset by the processor at IC3-8 will generate a non maskable interrupt at IC3-4 and will reset all the PIO devices at their reset pin (34). This circuit protects the system from problems that may arise through noise or incorrect operation. The programme is designed to continually retrigger IC1. Should this fail for any reason the system will be reset as described in under 20 milliseconds. Port 3 of the processor is the 8 bit data bus multiplexed with the low order address bits. The address bits are decoded by the octal latch IC7 which is controlled by the address strobe signal AS originating from IC3-39. The high order address bits originate from IC3 port 4.


IC19 is a dual 12 bit D/A converter. The 2 outputs are buffered by IC20:B and IC20:A. The 2 analogue outputs are kV DEMAND and mA DEMAND. These are output to the I/O PCB at PL1-45 and PL1-44 and also to the multiplexer at IC23-11 and IC23-10. This allows the processor to calibrate the D/A converters. D4 is a reference diode.The reference is buffered (-5V) and fed to IC18-2. The link option is provided as some pin compatible A/D converters contain their own reference circuits. In this case D4 would be omitted and the link changed over. A -10V reference is generated at IC20:D for the D/A converter. A +10V reference is generated at IC20:C for the potentiometers on the DISPLAY PCB. The outputs of the potentiometers are input at PL4 pins 1,2 and 3. They are buffered by IC22:A,B and C and input to the multiplexer IC23. The output of the multiplexer is buffered by IC22:D. Analogue signals from the generator mA FEEDBACK, kV FEEDBACK and +12V INPUT are connected at PL1 pins 48, 47 and 46. These are buffered and then input to the multiplexer. IC24 is a DC to DC converter which produces a -15V DC power supply for the analogue ICs. IC25 is a REAL TIME CLOCK (RTC) IC. When the main +5V DC supply is powered down this IC is fed from the battery B1. This is charged via R23 when the +5V DC is powered up. TR2 buffers the clock chip select and TR1 is turned off as the +5V DC decays. The RTC contains 64 bytes of battery backed RAM which retains the time of last use and the programme


DISPLAY PCB CIRCUIT DIAGRAM

The DISPLAY PCB includes 15 normally open switches that consist of 12 for the numeric keypad and 3 function keys. Connections for the three potentiometers are routed through the main connector SK1. Data from the CPU PCB is input serially at SK1-35. The 3 digit displays include driver circuitry which also drive the status LEDs LED1 to LED6. The various displays are addressed by the 4 data enable signals.

FAULT DIAGNOSIS

MP1 DIAGNOSTICS BY ERROR CODES E1

This means you have pressed the ENTER button after selecting an illegal programme eg. 801.

E2

A processor divide by zero has occurred. The MP1 will need to be powered off and on to reset.

E3

A processor divide overflow has occurred. The MP1 will need to be powered off and on to reset.

E4

The kV feedback has exceeded demand by 3% or 3 steps. This can be caused by a change in the power supply (220V) if sufficiently large. This may be caused by too fast a rate of change of demand or a fault in the MP1.

E5

The mA feedback has exceeded demand by 3% or 3 steps. This may be caused by too high a filament standby setting.

E6

Not Used.


E15

The flow switch in the cooler has opened, this will cause the SAFETY to extinguish.

E16

The temperature switch in the cooler has opened, this will cause the SAFETY to extinguish.

E17

The contactor sense signal is not present whilst an X- Ray On Command is detected. This may be because the key is in the wrong position.

E18

The kV feedback is still less than the demand by 3% or 3 counts after 10 seconds. This may be due to a missing MAIN supply (see error 54) or a converter problem.

E19

The mA feedback is still less than the demand by 3% or 3 counts after 10 seconds. This is most likely caused by too low a limit setting on the filament PCB in the generator.

This is caused by the MP1 not measuring the 12V Reference in the generator. The generator may be completely un-powered or the 25 way interconnect cable may not be connected.

This means that on receipt of an X-Ray ON (Control) signal the generator does not respond with an X-Ray On Status signal becoming true.


The following errors need software programme revision 4.8 or later.

E54

This indicates that the kV output did not exceed 5kV and implies a missing MAIN supply (220V) or converter problem.

E55

At power up the X Ray off signal chain is open circuit. This can be caused by the remote X Ray Off signal being open circuit in the LAB I/O interface.

E56

X Rays were terminated by the Safety 1 input being interrupted.

E57

X Rays were terminated by the Safety 2 input being interrupted.

E58

X Rays were terminated by the Cooler Flow (Error 15) input being interrupted.

E59

X Rays were terminated by the Cooler Temperature (Error 16) input being interrupted.

At power up the safety contactor in the Lab I/O Box was detected as activated.

FATAL ERRORS

F1

A check sum error is detected in the programme eprom at power up. This must be a defective EPROM.

The RAM is tested at power up and must be defective.

A check sum error is detected in the tube table EPROM at power up. This is most likely to be due to an incorrect switch setting on the CPU PCB.

F4

A programme corruption has caused the watchdog timer to trigger. The only option is to turn off power to the MP1 wait 10 seconds and switch back on.

F5

A programme corruption has caused a process to time out, reset as for F4. SAFETY LINES

These status signals will probably be caused by the breaking of an external interlock as part of the normal operation of the safety system. The GREEN safety lamp on the front panel should extinguish. S1

S1 indicates the lack of a +24V SAFETY 1 signal on the I/O PCB at PL2/1 or a


INTERFACE FAULTS

NO PREWARN

When the KEY is in position 3 the X-RAY OFF switch should be illuminated RED. This will be the case only if the SAFETY lamp is illuminated GREEN. If pressing the X-RAY ON switch does not cause the PREWARN lamp to illuminate BLUE (and optionally blink) then one of two interface faults may be to blame. First make sure that the Keyboard buzzer is enabled by selecting programme 903. If the display reads OFF then press CLEAR,1 and ENTER: a: If you press the SET key and a buzz is heard then you know you are in the X-RAY ON enable mode because the processor is detecting a +24V return from the HT Contactor in the LAB I/O connector pin H and so you should suspect the remote X-RAY OFF wire in the LAB I/O connector pin W not being returned as +24V. b: If a buzz is not heard then the processor thinks it is still in programme mode probably because the HT Contactor sense wire is not returning +24V in the LAB I/O connector pin H.


APPENDIX B : REVISION HISTORY OF PROGRAMME EPROM MP1-P

REVISION 2.4

Early production release. Do Not Use ! Problems with LED display dissipation. REVISION 2.9

Replaced 2.4. Fixed problem of LED display reliability and added Enginnering code 918 to set the Warm Up power limit. Fast clock (1 second timer ) added as an option. See Appendix C. REVISION 3.0

Errors corrected in the way the Errors E4,E5,E18 and E19 are calculated. Changes were made to the RS232 routines to prevent the main programme latching up due to excessive serial line traffic. The displays used to blink "88F" at switch on, this was corrected. A/D converter routines changed to prevent mains supply frequency synchronisation. REVISIONS 3.1 AND 3.2


REVISION 3.6

The calibration routine was changed so that the internal Engineers switch had to be selected to allow this procedure. (SW8 of SW1 on the CPU PCB). An Engineering routine 940 was added to correct for small monitor line offsets. See initialisation in this manual. A special programme option was enabled to switch between two unipolar tubes. See appendix C. REVISION 3.7

An error was found in the advisory code calender routines. This caused the advisory code to be erroneously triggered in the month of December. This was fixed. Due to the danger of incorrect operating parameters caused by erroneous calibration a new error was added, E38. If the calibration voltage is outside of a narrow band then this error will prevent operation. REVISION 3.8

A small start up bug was corrected which only had an affect with the table switch suffix

Initialisation of LED display blocks moved to avoid display errors on initialisation. Exponential warmup current changed to rise over 10 seconds at start of hold time. REVISION 4.4

A bug causing a flicker in the time display (Engineering code 908) fixed together with a bug in the Advisory display introduced in 4.4 REVISION 4.6

Bug fix for autobrightness believed introduced in 4.1. Bug fix for tube parameter calculation that was introduced in 4.1. This affects voltages over 320kV at Impedances of 1Meg or less. Namely Tables 33B and 34B. Warning was issued not to use Programme revisions between 4.1 and 4.5 with tables 33B and 34B (Bipolar). REVISION 4.7

Comet, the X-Ray tube manufacturers have suggested that it will enhance tube life if the systems are only warmed up to the voltage required rather than the maximum allowed. To this end we have added Engineering Code 949. Using this code the operator can set a new voltage limit for the system. The default value will be 0 which means that the EPROM Table value will not be over ridden. Entering a new value will modify the limit for the system including the warm ups and full scale of the potentiometers and all demanded voltage values.


APPENDIX C : PROGRAMME EPROM OPTIONS

We can assemble certain options into the main programme EPROM MP1-P. These are identified by a suffix letter. Engineering code 910 reports on revision status including any suffix. USER SELECTABLE CLOCK VERSION TYPE 'U' (eg 3.7U)

The timer can be switched from 0.1 minute to 1 second resolution. The new maximum time would be 9 Min. 59 Secs. Engineering code 919 is associated and special instructions are available. FAST CLOCK VERSION TYPE 'F' (eg 3.7F)

The 1 second timer only is enabled.

This is the programme version that works with a special add in PCB to enable switching between two unipolar tubes. Special instructions are available.
