Automatically Turn On Num Lock, Scroll Lock, and Caps Lock!
When you start your PC, Num Lock, Scroll Lock, and Caps Lock don't automatically toggle on. You can automatically turn each of them on or off whenever your PC starts, for all accounts on the PC. As a practical matter, most people probably want to have only Num Lock automatically turned on, but this Registry hack gives you the power to force any combination of keys on or off. Run the Registry Editor and go to:HKEY_USERS\.Default\Control Panel\Keyboard. Find the String value InitialKeyboardIndicators InitialKeyboardIndicators.. By default, it is set to 0, which means that Num Lock, Scroll Lock, and Caps Lock are all turned off. Set it to any of the following values, depending on the combination of keys you want turned on or off: 0

2. Reducing Start and shutdown Wait Time for
XP Speedup ! ! When you start to shut down Windows XP, it has to quit, or "kill," any live applications or processes that are currently current ly running. So close all applications first. However, some applications and processes are always running in the background. You can reduce the amount of time that Windows XP waits for those applications and processes to close before Windows XP kills them. Edit three different Registry settings to change this: 1. Open the Registry Editor. (Click ( Click start click run… and type regedit) regedit ) 2. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop. (1) Double click on WaitToKillAppTimeout and set the Value data to 1000. (2) Double Click on HungAppTimeout value and set the Value data to 1000 as well. Picture 1 4. Navigate to :HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop. Panel\Desktop. (1) Double click on WaitToKillAppTimeout and set the Value data to 1000. (2) Double Click on HungAppTimeout value and set the Value data to 1000 as well. Picture 2 5.Navigate to :HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control. Select the WaitToKillServiceTimeout value and set it to 1000. Picture 3 6. Close the Registry Editor. And Restart you PC.

3. Automatically Killing Tasks on Shutdown! You know the drill. You start to shut down the computer, you wait a few moments, and then you see a dialog box asking if you want to kill an application or service that is running. Instead of prompting you, you can make Windows XP take care of the kill task automatically. Here's how: 1. Open the Registry Editor. ( click start click run… and type regedit ) 2. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop. Panel\Desktop . 3. Highlight the value AutoEndTasks and change the value to 1. 4. Close the Registry Editor. 5. Restart your PC to take Effect.

4. Menu Speed! When XP first appeared, there was a lot of conversation about the new interface, both good and bad. In spite of the initial complaints, most users stick with the default settings rather than reverting to the Classic interface found in previous Windows versions. But you might want to change the delay you notice when you click the Start menu. I see no reason for there to be any delay when I click the Start menu. Effects are pretty, but I wouldn't click it if I didn't have business inside, so let's get it open and get moving. The default speed can be adjusted with w ith a quick Registry hack. 1. Open the Registry Editor. (Click ( Click start click run… and type regedit .) 2. Navigate:HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\MenuShowDelay. The default value is 400. Set it to 0 to remove the delay completely, but if you do that it will be nearly impossible to move the mouse fast enough not to activate All Programs if you mouse over it enroute to your final selection. Pick a number that suits your style, make the change, and then test it until you find a good compromise between speed and usability.

5. IMPROVE SWAPFILE PERFORMANCE If you have more than 256MB of RAM this tweak will considerably improve your performance. It basically makes sure that your PC uses every last drop of memory (faster than swap file) before it starts using the swap file. 1. Go to Start then Run … 2. Type ―msconfig ― msconfig.exe‖ .exe‖ then ok .
3. Click on the System.ini tab. 4. Expand the 386enh tab by clicking on the plus sign. 5. Click on new then in the blank box. Type‖ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1 ″ 6. Click OK 7. Restart PC

6. Place Windows Kernel into RAM! It's a given that anything that runs in RAM will be faster than an item that has to access the hard drive and virtual memory. Rather than have the kernel that is the foundation of XP using the slower Paging Executive functions, use this hack to create and set the DisablePagingExecutive DWORD to a value of 1. Perform this hack only if the system has 256MB or more of installed RAM! Edit the Registry key:(set the value to 0 to undo this hack). Exit the Registry and reboot. re gedit ) 1. Open the Registry Editor. (Click ( Click start click run… and type regedit 2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\MemoryManagement 3. Set the Value data to 1 to DisablePagingExecutive and have the kernel run in RAM. 4. Close the Registry Editor. 5. Restart your PC to take Effect.

7. Speed Up Shutd Shutdown own Times!
It's not only startup times that you'd like to speed up; you can also make sure that your system shuts down faster. If shutting down XP takes what seems to be an inordinate amount of time, here are a couple of steps you can take to speed up the shutdown process: Don't have XP clear your paging file at shutdown For security reasons, you can have XP clear your paging file (pagefile.sys) of its contents whenever you shut down. Your paging file is used to store temporary files and data, but when your system shuts down, information stays in the file. Some people prefer to have the paging file cleared at shutdown, because sensitive information such as unencrypted passwords sometimes ends up in the file. However, clearing the paging file can slow shutdown times significantly, so if extreme security isn't a high priority, you might not want to clear it. To shut down XP without clearing your paging file, run the Registry Editor and go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management Change the value of ClearPageFileAtShutdown to 0. Close the Registry and restart your computer. Whenever you turn off XP from now on, the paging file won't be cleared, and you should be able to shut down more quickly.

8. Enable Quicker Startups with a Boot Defragment!
There's another way to speed up XP startup: make your system do a boot defragment, which will put all the boot files next to one another on your hard disk. When boot files are in close proximity to one another, your system will start faster. On most systems, boot defragment should be enabled by default, but it may not be on yours, or it may have been changed inadvertently. To make sure that boot defragment is enabled on your system, run the Registry Editor and go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Dfrg\BootOptimizeFu nction Edit the Enable string value to Y if it is not already set to Y. Exit the Registry and reboot. The next time you reboot, you'll do a boot defragment.

9. Create One-Click Shutdown and Reboot Shortcuts!
Turning off or rebooting XP involves a several-step process: click the Start menu, choose Shut Down, and then select Shut Down or Restart. If you want, however, you can exit or reboot much more quickly, by creating a shortcut that enables one-click shutdowns. You can also use the shortcut to — for customize the shutdown or reboot — for example, by displaying a specific message or automatically shutting down any programs that are running. First, create a shortcut on your desktop by right-clicking on the desktop, choosing New, and then choosing Shortcut. The Create Shortcut Wizard appears. In the box asking for the location of the shortcut, type shutdown. After you create the shortcut, double-clicking on it will shut down your PC. But you can do much more with a shutdown shortcut than merely shut down your PC. You can add any combination of several switches to do extra duty, like this: shutdown -r -t 01 -c "Rebooting your PC" Double-clicking on that shortcut will reboot your PC after a one-second delay and display the message "Rebooting your PC." The shutdown command includes a variety of switches you can use to customize it. Table 1-3 lists all of them and describes descr ibes their use. I use this technique to create two shutdown shortcuts on my desktop — one one for turning off my PC, and one for rebooting. Here are the ones I use: shutdown -s -t 03 -c "See you later!" shutdown -r -t 03 -c "You can't get rid of me that quickly!" Table Switches you can use with shutdown Switch What it does -s -l -t nn -c "messagetext"
-f -r
Shuts down the PC. Logs off the current user. Indicates the duration of delay, in seconds, before performing the action. Displays a message in the System Shutdown window. A maximum of 127 characters can be used. The message must be enclosed in quotation marks. Forces any running applications to shut down. Reboots the PC. Free E-Book By Mithun Sharma

11. SPEED UP BOOT BY DISABLING UNUSED PORTS! You may have tried many tweaks like modifying windowsXP start-up applications, prefetches, unload DLLs method, etc. And yes those methods do work for me. I have just accidentally found out another way to give you an extra boost in windowsXP's boot performance. This is done by disabling your unused devices in Device Manager. for example, if you don't have input devices that are connected to one of your USBs or COM ports, disabling them will give you an extra perfromance boost in booting. Go to Control Panel -> System -> Hardware tab -> device manager Disable devices that you don't use for your PC and then restart. Do Dis !! 1. Start Registry Editor (Regedit.exe). 2. Locate the following key in the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\MemoryManagement\PrefetchParameters 3. Make sure you backup the keys by exporting them to a .reg file. 4. On the EnablePrefetcher value, change the setting from 3 to 5 (decimal). 5. Close the registry editor. 6. Restart your computer.

12. Disabling Recent Documents History!
Windows XP includes a feature that keeps track of all recent documents you have opened or used. The idea is that you can select Start/Recent Documents History and quickly reopen any document you have recently used. I use many documents each day and never use the feature myself. In my opinion, I can keep up with what I want to use without Windows XP doing it for me.The bad thing about Recent Documents History is that Windows XP has to calculate what should be put there each time you boot Windows, which can slow things down. So, if you never use the Recent ocuments History, it's a good idea to disable d isable it. Here's how: 1. Open the Registry Editor (select ( select Start/Run, type regedit, and click OK ). OK ). 2. Navigate to :HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Mcrosoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ Policies\Explorer. 3. Create a NoRecentDocsHistory D_WORD key. Double-click the value to open it once it is created. 4. Set the Data Value to 1 to enable enab le the restriction. 5. Click OK and close the Registry Editor. You'll need to restart the computer for the change to take effect.

Some of this information deals with resolving the site name to an IP address, address , the stuff that tcp/ip really deals with, not words. This will make shutdowns take longer, because it overwrites everything in the swap file with zeroes. Don‘t turn this feature on unless you have a serious security threat.

70. Hacking Secret Almost all system administrators make certain changes and make the system restricted. System Administrators can hide the RUN option, the FIND command, the entire Control Panel, drives in My Computer like D: A: etc. They can even restrict activities of a hacker my disabling or hiding, even the tiniest options or tools. Most commonly these restrictions are imposed locally and are controlled by the Windows Registry. But sometimes the smart system administrators control the activities of the hacker by imposing restrictions remotely through the main server.Poledit or Policy Editor is a small kewl tool which is being commonly used by system administrators to alter the settings of a system. This utility is not installed by default by Windows. You need to install in manually from the Windows 98 Installation Kit from the Resource Kit folder. user.dat file that we saw earlier. The Policy Editor tool imposes restrictions on the user's system by editing the user.dat file which in turn means that it edits the Windows Registry to change the settings. It can be used to control or restrict restrict access to each and every ever y folder and option you could ever think of. It has the power to even restrict access to individual folders, files, the Control Panel, MS DOS, the drives available etc. Sometimes this software does make life really hard for a Hacker. So how can we remove the restrictions imposed by the Policy Editor? Well read ahead to learn more. You see the Policy Editor is not the only way to restrict a user's activities. As we already know that the Policy Editor edits the Windows Registry(user.dat) file to impose such restrictions. So this in turn would mean that we can directly make changes to the Windows Registry using a .reg file or directly to remove or add restrictions. restrictions. Launch Regedit and go to the following Registry Key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/CurrentVersion/Policies Under this key, there will definitely be a key named explorer. Now under this explorer key we can create new DWORD values and modify it's value to 1 in order to impose the restriction. If you you want to remove the Restriction, then you can simply delete de lete the respective DWORD values or instead change their values to 0. The following is a list of DWORD values that can be created under the Explorer Key-: NoDeletePrinter: Disables Deletion of already installed Printers NoAddPrinter: Disables Addition of new Printers NoRun : Disables or hides the Run Co mmand NoSetFolders: Removes Folders from the Settings option on Start Menu (Control Panel, Printers, Taskbar) NoSetTaskbar: Removes Taskbar system folder from the Settings option on St art MenuNoFind: Removes the Find Tool Too l (Start >Find) NoDrives: Hides and does not display any Drives in My Computer NoNetHood: Hides or removes the Network Neighborhood icon from from the desktop NoDesktop: Hides all items including, file, folders and system folders from the DesktopNoClose: Disables Shutdown and prevents the user from normally shutting down Free E-Book By Mithun Sharma

73. Customizing the Right Click Context Menu of the Start Menu When you right click on the start menu, only 3 options pop up: Open, Explore, and Find. You can add your own programs to this pop up menu( which comes up when we right click on it.) Open Regedit and go to the following registry key: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Shell Right click on the shell and create a new Sub Key (You can create a new SubKey by right clicking on the Shell Key and selecting New > Key.). Type in the name of the application you want to add to the start menu. I want to add Notepad to the Start Menu and hence I name this new sub key, Notepad. Now right click on the new registry key that you just created and create yet another new key named Command. Enter the full path of the application, in this case Notepad in the default value of Command in the right pane. So I Modify the value of the default string value and enter the full pathname of Notepad: c:\wndows\notepad.exe. Now press F5 to refresh. Now if you right click on the Start Button you will find a new addition to the Pop Up Menu called Notepad. Clicking on it will launch Notepad. We can not only add but also remove the existing options in this pop up box. To delete the Find option, go to the following registry key: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Shell\Find Delete Find. DO NOT delete Open else you will not be able to open any folders in the Start Menu like Programs, Accessories etc. BMP Thumbnail As Icon You can actually change the default BMP icon to a thumbnail version of the actual BMP file. To do this simply goes to HKCU\Paint.Picture\Default. In the right pane change the value of default to %1. Please note however that this will slow down the display rate in explorer if there are too many BMP thumbnails to display. You can use other icons too, simply enter the pathname. To restore back to the normal change the vale of default back to: C:\Progra~1\Access~1\MSPA C:\Progra~1\Access~1\MSPAINT.EXE,1. INT.EXE,1.

77. Perform a Boot Defragment There's a simple way to speed up XP startup: make your system do a boot defragment, which will put all the boot files next to one another on your hard disk. When boot files are in close proximity to one another, your system will start faster. On most systems, boot defragment should be enabled by default, but it might not be on yours, or it might have been changed inadvertently. To make sure that boot defragment is enabled on your system, run the Registry Editor and go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Dfrg\BootOptimize Function Edit the Enable string value to Y if it is not already set to Y. Exit the Registry and reboot. The next time you reboot, you'll do a boot defragment.

79. Find Every File When you search for a file in Windows Windows searches only for file types it recognizes. Files that aren't listed in the 'Registered file types' list are ignored.Fortunately, a simple edit of the Registry will make Windows search for every file, regardless of its extension. Open the Registry Editor as described above, and then navigate to and select: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Cont entIndex. Double-click the FilterFilesWithUnknownExtensions icon in the right pane, change the 0 in the 'Value data' box to 1, and press Enter. To ensure that Windows XP searches for every possible file, select All Files and Folders under 'Type of file' in the Search Companion pane. (If you don't see this option, click More Advanced Options.) Check Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders (as desired). In Windows 2000, click Search Options, check Type, and make sure that (All Files and Folders) is selected in the resulting drop-down menu. Check Advanced Options, and make sure Search Subfolders is checked. Finally, to ensure that Windows 2000 finds system and hidden files, choose Tools, Folder Options and click the View tab. In the 'Advanced settings' list, select Show hidden files and folders. Uncheck Hide protected operating system files (Recommended), click yes to acknowledge the warning, and finish by clicking OK.

It will say it is not configured, but the truth is under the 'Explain' tab i.e."By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the bandwidth of a connection, but you can use this setting to override the default." So the trick is to ENABLE reservable bandwidth, then set it to ZERO. This will allow the system to reserve nothing, rather than th an the default 20%.It works on Win 2000 as well.
