Background of the Research
Introduction of Infrastructure and technology innovations into countries have always been the adversaries and blessing opportunities for socioeconomics and political life of human beings. Every technologies innovation has been a topic of debate and center of research ’s attention and some is the case with the development of social networking sites. Various researchers have conducted studies to pinpoint the several impacts of these sites on their user and finding suggested both bright and dark aspects. Hence, many countries gained open access to the internet due to rapid advances in information technology within the last twenty years (Kuppuswamy & Narayan, 2010). Social Networking Site can be defined as an online platform which builds and reflects the networking among people and builds relationship among them. Facebook is the most popular social networking site of all time. It is free and one of the best medium for communication. In 2004, Facebook was launched by Mark Zuckerberg along with his fellow Harvard College students. Until today, Facebook is the most famous social networking sites around the world with over 1.94 billion monthly active user (Facebook MAUs, March 2017) Most of the students don ’t realize the negative effects or impact of Facebook on their life. And the main reason is because they are already addicted to it and this addiction can lead several negative developments.
The main purpose of this study is to suggest some ways of minimizing the bad impacts of Facebook to students and to show how Facebook give impact to the students
Statement of the problem This study aims to identify the impact of facebook usage among Grade 12 students of San Roque National High School. So specifically, our study answers the following questions. 1. Does Facebook usage have impact on students? 2. What are the special motives that drive students? 3.
On average how much time do students spend on this site collectively per day?
4.
To what extent students are addicted to Facebook usage?
5.
Is the use of Facebook beneficial for students, or does it simply distract them?
6.
What should be done to encourage students to use Facebook responsibly?
Scope and Delimitation This study was conducted among the Grade 12 students of San Roque National High School during the School Year 2017-2018. This study determined the impact of Facebook usage among Grade 12 students of SRNHS. It also identified on how much time do students spend on this site collectively per day. From these, suggestions were suggested to encourage senior high school students to use Facebook responsibly.
The lesson covered in this study was on students ’ Facebook usage with the following subtopics: uses of Facebook to students and special motives that drive students to use facebook The study was delimited to the 100 Grade 12 students of San Roque National High School, Bamban, Tarlac for School Year 2017-2018 which are from Academic and Tech-voc tracks. After the conducted survey with the use of questionnaire, 17 respondents from each section were randomly selected so that all members of the group have an equal and independent chance of being selected. Random sampling was done by lottery or draw lots. Each student of sections received a questionnaire that they will answer and they will give their opinion. The study identified the impact of Facebook usage among grade 12 students of San Roque National High School and what should be done to encourage students to use Facebook responsibly.
