The @;S;@ !rogram is a global oral health education program being implemented in *urope and other 4sian ountries. $n the !hilippines, the program %as piloted in Aegion $>, ;atangas Division, of %hich results sho%ed the effectiveness of the program in oral health promotion. The program aims to enhance the oral health education component of school dental health program through the integration of four "# basic dental concepts in the elementary school curriculumB limit snac&ing s%eet and stic&y foodsB use of toothpaste %ith fluorideB proper toothbrushing, and regular visit to the dentist. Support instructional materials %ere developmed through the financial support of !!$ and has been used by the teachers in 5rades $-$$$. The school dentists in the other hand provided dental services to the recipients of the program.

The )ealth and +utrition enter in collaboration %ith the !hilippine $nstitute of Traditional and 4lternative )ealth are "!$T4)# embar&s on the use of herbal medicines and other alternative health care modalities in the management and treatment of common ailments among school children and personnel in the schools. Traditional and alternative health care services such as herbal medicine preparation and message therapy are integrated in the service
delivery
component of the total and nutrition program. The use of tried and tested herbal plants are intensified in the schools, thus, the need for funds to purchase s&in oitments, anti-cough syrups, antipyretic medicines, etc. %ill be minimied. SCHOOL NUTRITION PROGRAM

The ;rea&fast eeding !rogram !roect ";!# is a response to the problem of @short-term-hunger syndrome@ among public elementary school children %ho go to school %ithout having brea&fast. $t provides brea&fast meal in the form of fortified instant noodles and fortified biscuits in the school for a total of 12' days during the school year. The feeding activity is utilied as a venue for health and nutrition education and values development.

ood for School !rogram see&s to rescue poor families from hunger and undernutrition. $t is a food subsidy pac&age for young learners %ho belong to poor families. $t provides daily ration of one "1# &ilo of rice to identified families through the child. 4s long as the child goes to school everyday, the family is assured of staple food on their table.

The T! 4pproach to school health and nutrition utilies an innovative relay system to strengthen the carry-over of learningFs the child has mastered in school to the home, thus, promoting the sharing of messages and s&ills %ith the other members of the family. 3nder this scheme, health and nutrition messages presented in the classroom are relayed through the children to the parents %ho are epected to eventually put these messages into practice at home. )ome activities are designed in T! modules, guides and %or&boo&s to assure the participation of parents/family in health and nutrition eperiences. ood and nutrition needs of school children have been given priority concern by the government in response to the findings that hunger and malnutrition affect their academic performance. The emphasis in malunggay is simply due to the line of benefits it offers to improve health and nutrition. Aecently, the Department of *ducation in coordination %ith the ood and +utritional Aesearch $nstitute, conducted a 2-%ee& %or&shop on the development and standardiation of malunggay-based recipes for in-school feeding. 4 total of 1 malunngay recipes %ere developed and a recipe boo& is no% being finalied for dissemination to the field. $t also include a '-day cycle menu in schools through the home economics teachers and school canteen teachers as guide in the preparation of meals, snac&s and drin& concoction for school feeding. Aecepes %ere developed by selected nutritionist-dietitians and %riters from various regions of the country. The cost per serving is affordable, ranging from !.'' to !17.'' only. The school health personnel shall conduct health eamination and health profiling of all teachers and non-teaching personnel. The findings %ill be recorded in the TeacherFs )ealth Aecord. !ersonnel found during the eamination to be at ris& of certain diseases or %ith early signs and symptoms of diseases are further screened by the school medical officers and nurses through the use of diagnostic tools such as glucose meter for diabetes, hemoglobin color scale for anemia, otoscope/audiometer for hearing impairment, SnellenFs chart for visual acuity, etc. Dental eamination is conducted by the school dentists. 4ll teachers %ho are diagnosed

The proect started in 1EEE and is continuously epanding due to positive responses and promising results in the field. $nitially, the proect involved 11 pilot elementary schools from 27 pilot division "2' provinces and 7 cities# nation%ide. $n the year 2''', Training of Trainors on )ealth !romoting Schools %as conducted by the )ealth and +utrition enter, in cooperation %ith 3+$* to selected Aegionald and Division )ealth and +utrition !ersonnel and *ducation Supervisors and !rincipals of the pilot schools. 4fter the training, all of them %ere able to conduct echo training in their respective divisions. *very year the )!S
