(omplete the te+t with an appropriate word in each gap. In 1899, a lighthouse was built on one of the Flannan Isles, off the north-west coast of Scotland, to warn passing ships about the dangerous rocks around the islands. Then, one night in !ecember 19"", a passing ship said 1 ############ the hadn$t seen a light in the lighthouse. Read the article. #atch each paragraph 10' with the heading A0 that best %its. There is one heading &o do not need. Mystery book
1 ############# ne of the most msterious books in the world is the so-called onich manuscript. The name refers to )ilfrid onich, a book collector who bought the manuscript in Ital in 191'. )e do not know who wrote the manuscript or wh, but scientific analsis shows that it probabl dates from the fifteenth centur and was written in northern Ital. ttempts to trace the histor of the manuscript ha&e identified some of its pre&ious keepers, but ha&e opened up more /uestions than the ha&e answered. ' ############# The book is about '0" pages long and appears to ha&e si% main parts. It is richl illustrated with pictures of plants, animals, people and stars. There are man theories about the sub*ect matter of the manuscript. The pictures suggest that the manuscript ma be a handbook for doctors working with herbs, but no one knows for sure. )h is that the case 2ecause no-one can read it3 4 ############# The book was written in a language that nobod has been able to read, using letters that nobod recognises. 5an people think the book is written in code, but e&en the most e%perienced code-breakers ha&e been unable to translate it. 6%perts ha&e identified about 4" recurring letters or smbols that ma correspond to an encoded alphabet7 howe&er, there are also a number of letters or smbols that appear onl once or twice in the whole book. There appear to be nearl 4,""" words$ in the manuscript. 0 ############# 6%perts usuall agree that the first section is about plants, and t hat the first word on each page is the name of a plant. This section follows the pattern of medie&al herbal guides with descriptions and careful illustrations. 2ut this does not make it easier to understand the manuscript because nobod recognises the plants. Some l ook familiar, but the pictures often show peculiar details that don$t match an known plants, or the combine the roots of one plant with the flowers, fruit and lea&es of other species. ############# Some people suggest the book must ha&e been a kind of trick or hoa% and that the reason we cannot understand it is that it doesn$t mean anthing. thers argue that it can$t ha&e been *ust a *oke because writing '0" pages and drawing the comple% pictures must ha&e taken months and been a lot of hard work. ne theor is that someone with a mental illness wrote the book, and that it is a product of his or her imagination. )e ma ne&er know, but the onich manuscript continues to be one of the world$s greatest msteries.
