How to Use BESTune? (More Info: Go back to BESTune home page) page )
BESTune is very easy to use. ust run the e!ecutab"e #BESTune.e!e# an$ fo""o% the se"f& e!p"anatory instructions on the G'I or the step&by&step instructions be"o%. Step 1: reate $ata fi"e copv.t!t
reate a fi"e name$ copv.t!t %hich contains the open&"oop bump test $ata (or c"ose$& "oop $ata if open&"oop $ata is unavai"ab"e). It is important that the * an$ +, be correct"y chosen as $efine$ by the +I- euations an$ euations an$ the * an$ +, $ata sho% enough $ynamics of the process. The samp"ing perio$s are the same T. T shou"$ be c"ose to3 the samp"ing perio$ use$ by your +I- euation (i.e. the time perio$ that your +I- contro""er up$ates its output). However3 if the ratio (process $ea$&time)0(samp"ing perio$) is "arger than 1453 you have three options op tions to make this ratio "ess than 641 (746 is recommen$e$). 7. 8e$uce the the process process $ea$&tim $ea$&time3 e3 e.g. move move the sensor sensor c"oser c"oser to your proces process. s. 6. Increase Increase your +I- contro""er contro""er9s 9s samp"ing samp"ing perio$. perio$. . Increase Increase the samp"i samp"ing ng perio$ perio$ %hen you you co""ect co""ect the * * an$ +, $ata %ithout %ithout changing your +I- contro""er9s samp"ing perio$.
In some app"ications you are not a""o%e$ to have options 7 an$ 6. But option is usua""y enough to re$uce the ratio. It is important that your * an$ +, $ata shou"$ sho% ho% changes in * %i"" affect the +, variab"e. ;or this purpose it is suggeste$ that the number of samp"es be no "ess than 622422 (72224222 samp"es is recommen$e$). -on9t "eave any e!tra b"anks at the en$ of the copv.t!t fi"e. Step $: Enter samp"ing perio$ T use$ in #copv.t!t# in secon$s. Step %: Enter your process9 $ea$&time in secon$s.
The $ea$&time3 a"so ca""e$ time $e"ay or "ag3 is the time perio$ from the time %hen there is a change (increase or $ecrease) in * to the time %hen +, begins to respon$ to this * change. Step '& Make a guess of the or$er of your process. If you have no i$ea about this3 p"ease se"ect 6n$ or$er. This is a goo$ choice for most processes. Step (: Se"ect #+I# or #+I-# if you %ant your contro""er to be a +I or +I- contro""er
If your +I- contro""er is of type / or type B3 it is recommen$e$ that you se"ect #+I# to make your contro""er a +I contro""er. Step ): Set tightness for your contro""er.
Move the s"i$e to the right if you %ant your contro""er to be tighter. The tightness in$e! can change from 7 to 722. If your +I- contro""er is of type / or type B3 it is recommen$e$ that you re$uce the tightness in$e! to un$er 62. ;or more $etai"s take a "ook at http:00bestune.12megs.com0type/B.htm. Step *: "ick the step < push button to tune your +I or +I- contro""er.
The time nee$e$ for tuning increases as the ratio of the $ea$&time (step ) to the samp"ing perio$ (step 6) increases. Typica""y the tuning is finishe$ in "ess than 7 secon$. +"ease %ait unti" the top bar of the BESTune G'I turns b"ue. Step +: Se"ect the +I- contro""er you are using from the pu"" $o%n menu.
If your contro""er is not in the menu3 you can choose one that is c"osest to your contro""er an$ convert the tuning resu"t to that of yours. If you %ant your contro""er to be inc"u$e$ in the "ist3 p"ease te"" us %hat +I- euation your contro""er is using. Step ,: "ick the step 5 push button to sho% the tuning resu"ts for your contro""er.
+"ease pay attention to the units of the tuning constants. The progress bar at the "o%er an$ "eft corner of the G'I sho%s ho% much $ynamics is in your copv.t!t fi"e. =igh $ynamics in your copv.t!t fi"e is important for getting correct tuning resu"ts an$ hence is an important criterion %hen choose your * an$ +, $ata. Step 1-: Se"ect the +I- euation type your contro""er is using.
There are three +I- euation types: Type A: /"" the three +3 I3 an$ - terms act on the error e>setpoint&+,. This is the so ca""e$ te!tbook +I- euation. ?e $on9t recommen$ the use of type /. Type B: The + term an$ I term act on the error e>setpoint&+, an$ the - term act on +,. Most in$ustria" +I- contro""ers (e.g.3 /""en&Bra$"ey9s +@s) use this type of +Ieuation. Type B is better than Type /. Type C : Both + an$ - terms act on +,3 on"y the I term acts on the error e>setpoint&+,. ?e strong"y recommen$ this type of +I- euations. If you are a""o%e$ to imp"ement your o%n +I- euation3 it is strong"y recommen$e$ that you imp"ement type +I- euation. "ick here to fin$ more about these three types.
/"though %e strong"y recommen$ type +I- euations3 if your contro""er is not type 3 you have to correct"y choose the actua" type of your +I- euations. It is very sa$ that most +I- euations imp"emente$ in in$ustry are either type / or type B. In such a case3 you have to choose type / or type B. Step 11: Enter setpoint seuence3 upper an$ "o%er "imits for *3 an$ simu"ation time span. Step 1$: By c"icking on the push button3 you can $o the off&"ine #%hat if# simu"ation.
This a""o%s you to see ho% your +I- contro""er %i"" perform if the tuning constants given by BESTune are use$. If your +I- contro""er is of type 3 your contro""er9s performance is usua""y very goo$. =o%ever3 if your +I- contro""er is of type B an$ especia""y of type /3 you may observe overshoot in the #%hat if# simu"ation. If this occurs3 ou !an redu!e the overshoot b redu!ing the !ontroller tightness in step ) .go ba!/ to step ) and redu!e the tightness until no overshoot o!!urs at Step 1$0 "ick here to fin$ more about these three types. Step 1%: If you %ish3 you can try tuning your contro""er manua""y. Step 1': "ick this push button to see the performance of your manua""y tune$ or e!isting contro" "oop.
