Linehan’s conceptual model allowed for the first time a nuanced analysis of social class composition of BUF membership which enabled his investigation into the emergence and development of Mosleyite fascism in the East End to be much more specific about who supported the fascist movement than any previous scholarly study. Linehan’s research rejected the theory that the fascist general rank-and-file was dominated by one social class in general and a certain ‘type’ of member, the ‘middle-class’ recruit, in particular. He in his own words was able to go ‘much further’ than Rawnsley in ‘pointing up’ the ‘lower class’ aspect of BUF membership15.
